The men's golf team captured a second place finish in the Navy Spring Invitational this weekend. Though a victory was within reach, Princeton fell short of a winning performance — finishing seven shots away from gaining the crown. Georgetown came in first with a score of 593, while the Tigers took second with a score of 600.
Tigers began the tournament with a first day score of 297. The second round lagged slightly with a team score of 303 in the rain.
Top results from individual players were evidence of the team's overall achievement. Sophomore Nat Hoopes, in particular, displayed a stunning performance, placing first with an overall score of 145. Hoopes began strong by shooting a three-under par 68 in the first round, and ended the second round with a score of 77. He finished the tournament tied, and seized the individual victory with a par in a sudden death playoff over freshman Nick Cook of Georgetown.
"The back nine I played the first day was one of the best I have ever played," Hoopes said.
With five birdies and one bogey on the second nine, for a score of 32, this can hardly be surprising. Other players also placed well individually. Junior James Milam came in 15th place with a total score of 151. Milam's first round score of 79 was answered with an improved total of 72 in round two.
Following closely behind Milam was McWhorter, with a 20th place finish and score of 153. McWhorter's first and second round scores showed consistency, with a 76 shot the first day and 77 shot the next day.
Freshman Greg Johnson and sophomore Cassidy Traub tied in 26th place with a final score of 154. Johnson played a solid tournament, carding two rounds of 77, while Traub similarly remained steady with a 76 in round one and a 78 in round two.
Despite an individual championship and a team finish in second place, the Tigers were not entirely satisfied with their performances.
"Overall, winning the playoff was exciting, but we definitely could have won as a team, which was a little disappointing," Hoopes said.
The team will get a chance to prove how good it can be in the upcoming Princeton Invitational which will be held April 13 at Springdale Golf Club.
