Captains are supposed to be good to their teams. They are supposed to give them support, keep them in line, give them pointers. In other words, they're supposed to help the team win. But what junior James Milam and senior Peter McWhorter did for the men's golf team at the Ivy League championships this weekend was more than anyone could ask.
While some of their teammates struggled during the team's three rounds Saturday and Sunday, Milam and McWhorter smoked the competition. Both tied for first place with three-round totals of 220, carrying the Tigers to their second consecutive Ivy title.
In the first round Saturday, the three other Princeton golfers shot rounds of 77, 76 and 78. Unwilling to see their team fall far behind a streaking Yale, McWhorter shot a 71 and Milam shot a 72. The two again carded Princeton's lowest scores in the second round, pushing the Tigers into the lead.
Leading by two strokes after the first day, McWhorter slipped slightly with a 76 on Sunday. Fortunately for Princeton, Milam was there to support his co-captain, ripping a 73 in windy conditions. Behind Milam and McWhorter, Princeton left Yale in the dust and held off a charging Penn to win by a comfortable nine strokes.
Though Yale's Louis Aurelio took medalist honors in the playoff, McWhorter and Milam's job was already complete. The captains had led their team to victory.
