Individuals make names for themselves at NCAA Tourneys

While the men's basketball team has been receiving all of the attention regarding the upcoming NCAA tournament, there are a number of other teams and individuals who either have already competed or will compete in the top collegiate tournament in the country.

Track & Field

Freshman phenom Josh McCaughey represented Princeton at the NCAA Track and Field Championships last weekend at the University of Arkansas. McCaughey earned All-America status, finishing 15th in the 35-lb. weight throw with an effort of 64 feet, 1 inch.

The throw was short of a personal best by the freshman who heaved the weight 67-10.75 at the Princeton Invitational on Feb. 17 to set the junior national record.

The event was won by Andras Haklits of Georgia, who become the first collegian to throw the weight over 80 feet — recording a spectacular throw of 80-2 in the finals. Haklits beat his closest competitor — Libor Charfreitag of Southern Methodist — by over a foot en route to the championship.

McCaughey now sets his sights on the outdoor season and the Princeton record of 69-3.5 held by Dave Pellegrini '80, who set the record in the winter of his senior season at the NCAA Championships.

Wrestling

Princeton will be represented at the NCAA Championships for the first time in ten seasons when three Tigers — senior Ryan Bonfiglio, junior Juan Venturi and sophomore Greg Parker — make the trip to Iowa State. This represents the culmination of a season in which Princeton made itself a strong competitor against the rest of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association.

Bonfiglio has been one of the leaders of the team all season and earned his bid to NCAAs as a result of a second-place finish at the EIWA Championships that were held March 3-4.

The 165-lb. wrestler has already compiled a 24-9 record on the season and will have one more chance to compete against the best collegiate competition in the country.

Venturi also finished second at EIWAs, losing in the finals to top-ranked Matt Picarsic of Harvard. The 133-lb. competitor comes into the tournament with a record of 19-7 on the season.

Parker has been part of a core of strong, young wrestlers for the Tigers and will compete in the 174-lb. class. He comes into the tournament with a 27-14 record.

The last Tiger to compete at NCAAs was John Gluckow '91, who faced Cornell wrestler Michael New — currently Princeton's head coach.

Diving

Senior Erin Lutz and junior Danielle Stramandi each have qualified for the NCAA Diving Championships to be held Thursday through Saturday in Long Island, N.Y.

The two earned their spots by winning the Zone A Diving Regionals last weekend in Annapolis, Md. Lutz came out on top in the one-meter competition while Stramandi won the platform competition. Only four competitors advanced from Zone A to the championships.
