Browsing for 'good genes' and a perfect Ivy match

A good Ivy League man is hard to find. Thankfully, the Web gurus at www.GoodGenes.com are making the task a little easier.

Good Genes, Inc. — the self-acclaimed "introduction service for the Ivy League et al" according to one of the Website's eye-catching graphics — is dedicated to helping alumni and faculty of prominent universities, including Princeton, who are tired of looking for companionship at the shallow end of the gene pool.

As with other match-making sites, members of Good- Genes.com are privileged to a number of opportunities to seek and discover members of the opposite sex. What makes Good Genes, Inc. different is its application process.

"It will only take a few minutes and soon you will be playing in a league of your own," the site says of the process.

Aside from the usual membership fee, optional photo and questionnaire — which covers everything from a physical description to political views and preferred vacation sites — membership requires proof of status as a graduate or faculty member of one of the accepted universities.

The site is not, however, as exclusive as it may initially appear. It acknowledges that good genes abound at about 75 different undergraduate and graduate universities — ranging through the Ivy League schools and including such institutions as Julliard — and at any medical or law school.

Once the application process is completed, members can browse profiles of persons of the opposite sex, enjoy the site's monthly newsletter and even participate in social events that Good Genes organizes to help unite members in some cities.

The site — which was established in November 1999 — has members ranging in age from 22 to 77, of whom currently 55 percent are female and 45 percent male.

Though Good Genes may seem rather ridiculous at first — or after hours of navigating the site — there are testimonials from people who have found suitable companions on the site.

"A Good Genes match was so great that we have decided to make a life together," wrote "Yasmina," a former member of the site who has opted to be removed from the circulation. "At least eight women who have met Bob have asked me for information on how to find Good Genes," she said.

And men seemed to find great success on the site as well. "I feel I will always owe Good Genes," wrote "Bob," who met a woman through the site with whom he plans to have an exclusive relationship. One unnamed man wrote that he was so pleased with the service that he was going to refer his daughter to it.

Despite these heart-warming and touching accounts of finally finding a lasting love after a lifetime of searching, the overall quality of the site is questionable. The probability you will find your dream partner online, for example, remains slim.

To the Web designer's credit, the site is very attractive looking. It is bright, colorful and filled with pictures that capture the perfect elements of relationships for which many people strive.

The annual membership fee of $110, however, could be better spent on a bouquet of flowers and a romantic dinner for two.
