Fencing

Several members of the men's and women's fencing teams attended the Junior Olympics over the weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sophomore Bill Beaver finished in a tie for 45th place in epee competition. Two Tigers competed in the sabre, with sophomore Jim Leighton taking 32nd and sophomore Ed Chou finishing 34th.

The men's and women's ski teams competed in the Fairfield Invitational last weekend. The invitational was an opportunity for both teams to qualify for this weekend's regional championships in West Virginia, at which teams can qualify for the national championships.

The women's team qualified for regionals by taking first place in the invite. The Tigers swept first through third in the giant slalom, with senior Kelcy Walker taking third, junior Sarah Apgar finishing second and freshman Ashley Collins winning. Apgar went on to win the slalom, while freshman Sloan Fischer finished third. With her first in the slalom and second in the giant slalom, Apgar took first place overall.

"The women's team deserves all the recognition they can get —they're really amazing," senior Eric Berg said. "As for the men, well, we all just try not to fall down too much and hope that [senior Arron] Melvin can win it all for us."

Melvin did his best carry his team, but his first-place overall was not enough. The Tigers failed to qualify for regionals.

Figure Skating

The figure skating team hosted the Princeton University Intercollegiate Figure Skating Competition this week at Baker Rink. The Tigers finished fifth with 24 points. Northwestern won the competition with 55 points.

The Tigers considered the meet a resounding success because they managed to knock off Penn State, which finished seventh. Furthermore, Princeton tied with Cornell, which fielded almost twice as many competitors as did the Tigers.
