Defensemen aren't supposed to be the leading offensive weapons on an ice hockey team.
Neither are freshmen.
But when freshman defenseman Matthew Maglione drove to the net two minutes, 54 seconds into overtime and scored on the rebound of senior forward Chris Corrinet's shot, the freshman had taken the spotlight on senior night.
But merely scoring the game-winning goal that gave the Tigers their first three-point weekend of the season was not enough. As his teammates leaped off the bench to congratulate him, Maglione rushed to the center of the ice, sat down and created his own victory celebration — a dance known as "The Canoe."
Before the rest of the Tigers got to him and ended his display, Maglione took his stick and "paddled" his way across the ice to the cheers of his team and the Baker Rink crowd.
His game-winner and impromptu dance were not the only weekend highlights for Maglione, however, as the freshman also scored the Tigers only goal in Friday's 1-1 tie with Dartmouth. Maglione finished off a series of pinball passes by Corrinet and senior Kirk Lamb by stuffing home the puck from the doorstep to assure the Tigers of a point.
Now with four goals on the season — and one new dance — the Tigers hope that Maglione will continue to be a solid blue line presence — with a little extra style.
