Sophs to inspect clubs Sunday; class Bicker meeting scheduled

January 10, 1958 — Members of the Class of 1960 will make their first mass invasion of Prospect St. Sunday night.

Between 7:30 and midnight, all 17 upperclass eating clubs will be open for inspection, giving sophomores the opportunity to see the physical layouts of the various clubs.

Preceding the architectural tour, a sophomore class meeting will be held in Alexander Hall at 7:15.

Class President Roger H. Frazier, who is also chairman of the Sophomore Bicker Committee, and Steven C. Rockefeller '58, chairman of the ICC, will give brief speeches at the meeting, which is expected to last 15 to 20 minutes.

Members of the Sophomore Bicker Committee will also be introduced to the class during the course of this short session.

Immediately following the meeting, the clubs will be opened for inspection.

"Both the ICC and the Sophomore Bicker Committee have strongly recommended that each sophomore visit all the clubs during the architectural tour," Frazier stated yesterday.

"However," he continued, "admitting that sophomores should visit as many clubs as possible, I believe that they should also make sure that they spend enough time at each club to learn a reasonable amount about it.

"This should be done even if it means that a sophomore has to miss two or three clubs," he said.

Sunday's sophomore meeting and the architectural tour are the last slated events concerning Bicker until the actual calling period opens Jan. 30.

Earlier in the year, ICC Chairman Rockefeller pledged his "every effort" toward gaining a "natural" 100 percent Bicker.

Though the ICC has made no guarantees, Rockefeller has promised that the ICC will work to get "any boy who wants to get into a club a bid."

The University has traditionally maintained a hands-off policy concerning the club election system.

However, Dean of Students William D'O. Lippincot '41, head of the Central Committee on Clubs, has given his backing to the ICC's "natural" 100 percent Bicker statement.

A 100 percent Bicker was reached in the previous club election period, which was held in November 1956 rather than between semesters.

Pamphlets

As in previous years, both the Sophomore Bicker Committee and the ICC have issued pamphlets in regard to Bicker.

The sophomore booklet "Common Sense" was distributed before the Christmas vacation, while plans have been set to deliver the 32-page ICC pamphlets at the class meeting Sunday, not today as previously announced.

Titled "Now That You Are Eligible . . . ," the ICC booklet contains definitions of Bicker terms, a schedule of Bicker events and a chart dealing with the fees and rates of the various clubs.

A list of the members of the 17 Prospect St. clubs and a description of the "Gentlemen's Agreement" between the eating clubs and the University are also included in the publication.
