David Splithoff

Breaking completely with Princeton tradition, the football coaching staff decided to go out on a limb and start freshman quarterback David Splithoff Saturday, the first freshman to start under center in 132 years.

What the staff found was that it was not such a large leap of faith.

Splithoff emerged as a potent offensive force in the Tigers' 55-28 victory over Brown. His combination of precision passing and smart playmaking resulted in a spectacular performance, as he went 13 of 17 for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Even in the face of Brown's blitz, Splithoff kept incredible composure in the pocket, scrambling away from Bear defenders, and hitting his receivers downfield. He also tacked on 85 yards rushing, making him partly responsible for 374 of the Tigers' 514 total yards. With this impressive afternoon, Princeton bolted to the top of the Ivy League standings, putting it in the middle of a dogfight for the conference title.
