The U.S. Department of Energy yesterday named the University among more than 550 companies and research sites nationwide that may have secretly processed radioactive or toxic materials for the U.S. nuclear weapons program.
University spokeswoman Marilyn Marks said yesterday she does not know why the University is on the DOE's list.
Marks said the energy department plans to release more information on the listed sites next week.
Though not specifically included on the list, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory issued a statement yesterday explaining that the lab performs research on magnetic fusion energy, "an abundant, safe and environmentally attractive new energy source."
"PPPL has never performed any work for the U.S. nuclear weapons program," the statement reads.
The lab is funded by the DOE and managed by the University.
More than 30 universities were named by the energy department as possible processing sites, including all the Ivy League institutions except Dartmouth.
