Two incoming University freshmen witnessed a shooting while participating in an Urban Action project in Trenton on Sept. 6, according to Bess Jensen, Student Volunteer Council program coordinator.
The group was working for Habitat for Humanity at the Martin House — an urban renewal project in Trenton — when shots were fired at about noon down the street from the site.
None of the Urban Action participants were directly involved in the incident, but the two students who witnessed the event have filed reports with the Trenton police department, Jensen said.
Police say shots were fired during a squabble between four men. All were armed, and one was struck in the leg. Three of the men have been identified and warrants have been issued for their arrests, but no one has been taken into custody yet, police said.
Urban Action program coordinator Matt Oxman '01 said the incident would have no effect on the future of the Urban Action program.
"It was a grim reminder for everyone involved of the realities and decay of the inner city of Trenton," Oxman said.
Urban Action leaders at the Martin House declined to comment yesterday on the incident.
Martin House was Urban Action's original site when the program began 12 years ago, and it continues to have a strong partnership with the SVC.
Located in the East State Street neighborhood of Trenton, the organization buys real estate, renovating the houses and developing the property. The houses then are sold at low mortgage rates to families that qualify.
The SVC also sponsors weekly tutoring and construction projects with the Martin House throughout the year.
