Construction on the University's new parking garage — located behind the New South building and adjacent to Baker Rink — is expected to be completed in December, according to Jon Hlafter '61, director of physical planning.
Most of the 740-space parking garage — begun in February — was completed during the summer, but Hlafter said the remaining time before the opening will be used for marking spaces and completing other finishing touches.
Students will benefit indirectly from the construction of the garage. Though parking spaces inside have been set aside for faculty and staff parking, the parking spots vacated by the move into the garage will be made available to students.
"The garage will allow for significant expansion of student parking in the southwest portion of campus," Hlafter said.
The new garage is expected to cost the University between $9.75 and $10 million. There are no current plans to build a similar garage for student parking, according to Hlafter.
"All student parking will continue to take place in surface lots," he said.
Constructed primarily with precast concrete panels, the garage has taken the better part of one year to build as the result of a lengthy building-review process.
"We started later than anyone had hoped because of reviews," Hlafter said. "But the garage will be completed in under a year's time."
"The most positive impact will be more spaces available to the students," he added.
