Morris named interim w. hoops coach after Feeley's departure

With all the attention the men's basketball team has gotten after the loss of head coach Bill Carmody and star center Chris Young, it would be easy to overlook the events that have taken place on the women's side.

Coming off a 9-19 (6-8 Ivy League) season, Princeton is hoping that a new coach will help reverse the trend in the win-loss column. The Tigers have hired Kevin Morris as interim coach to replace Liz Feeley, who left Princeton to become the head coach at Smith College in Massachusetts earlier in the summer.

The athletic department will begin the search for a permanent head coach during the basketball season, according to Director of Athletics Gary Walters '67.

"We will begin to advertise the position in mid-to-late winter," Walters said, with a "provisional target" of mid-to-late March for the naming of a permanent coach.

"The interview process should begin towards the end of the season," Walters added.

With a little help

Following standard Department procedure, a commission will be appointed to advise Walters on the decision.

In the interim, the Tigers will be directed by the former Fordham head coach and Harvard assistant Morris. Morris led the Lady Rams to an NCAA tournament appearance in 1994 after winning the Patriot League regular season and tournament championships.

"College teams change quickly," Morris said. "One year is not necessarily indicative of what is to follow in the coming years. We intend to have the best year we can possibly have through the hard work and effort of the personnel we have on the team."

The athletic department has high hopes for Morris' tenure, although at this point in the process, it appears likely that Morris will be replaced by a more permanent head coach after the season concludes.

"Kevin Morris brings a sense of stability to Princeton's women's basketball at a time when it is greatly needed," Associate Director of Athletics for Intercollegiate Programming Jim Fiore said. "He is well equipped and has a strong background at Fordham, which is a high-profile academic and athletic institution, making him the logical fit."

Smoothing the transition period will be the return of Becky Timmins as the new head coach's first assistant.

"She will serve as a bridge for the team and administration, providing a sense of continuity," Fiore said.

Morris will inherit a team that lost two of its top performers to graduation in guard Maggie Langlas '00 and forward Kate Thirolf '00.
