The Council of Scientific Society Presidents, a national organization composed of the leaders of several research organizations, awarded its 2000 Leadership Citation to President Shapiro on Sunday.
The award, which was given for "stellar leadership toward resolution of the most complex ethical issues," according to a University statement, was presented at the council's national meeting in Washington, D.C., where Shapiro was a guest speaker. The council cited Shapiro's role in examining the most challenging ethical issues of the past decade, especially those raised by recent advances in biology and medicine.
Past recipients of the reward include former head of the Food and Drug Administration David Kessler and United States Senator Pete Dominici. Shapiro, whose holds a Ph.D. in economics, serves as chair of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission.
