Borough Police narrows scope of charges against arrested students

Borough Police Lt. Charles Davall said yesterday that a police investigation has determined that Dennis Alshuler '03 and Sloan Bermann '02 — the two University students arrested last month on charges of lewdness and harassment — did not masturbate in front of a female University student and chase her while exposing themselves.

"There were multiple students involved in the incident. We couldn't confirm which one masturbated," Davall said. "The only thing those two would admit to is mooning."

Alshuler said he and Bermann have maintained that reports about the incident have been inaccurate. "From the beginning, we knew that we made a mistake in mooning people, but it was ridiculous that people thought we were masturbating and chasing after girls," he said. "I didn't even hear about the masturbating until Public Safety came to our rooms at 4:30 in the morning and asked us about it."

"It's unfortunate this has gotten pinned on us," he added.

Davall said, however, that charges against the two students would not be dropped, since witnesses reported the students made harassing comments and the students admitted to exposing their buttocks during an arch sing at 1879 Arch.

Crime Prevention Specialist Barry Weiser said he was surprised to learn Borough Police did not believe Alshuler and Bermann masturbated in public and pursued the female student.

"These guys were identified during our investigation as two of those involved," Weiser said. "If Davall said these two are not the ones who actually did it, OK, but that's the first that I've heard of it."

"If that's the case, there are two other people out there we need to find," Weiser added.
