County judge sets $400,000 bail for shooting suspect

A county judge set a $400,000 bail Monday for the man accused of shooting his wife in the parking lot of the Merwick Rehabilitation Unit on Oct. 18, Mercer County Prosecutor spokeswoman Emily Hornaday said yesterday.

Errol Thompson, 49, is charged with two counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault in addition to 16 lesser violations, according to Hornaday. He was indicted March 15 while still at large.

According to police, Thompson allegedly shot his wife, Dorothy Thompson, three times while she sat in her car and also shot at one of his wife's male coworkers. Dorothy Thompson was later transported to Helene Fuld Medical Center in Trenton and eventually released.

"Provided he doesn't make bail, he will remain incarcerated in the county detention center until the trial," Hornaday said.

According to Hornaday, Thompson will appear in a series of court status conferences after he is assigned counsel. During these conferences, he will have the opportunity to enter his plea.

Thompson was arrested in St. Petersburg, Fla., on April 3 after an exhaustive manhunt by New Jersey law enforcement officials.
