Grad college experiences numerous false fire alarms

The Graduate College has been the site of an unusually large number of false fire alarms during the past few weeks, Sgt. Allen Lawson of Public Safety said yesterday. According to Lawson, the false alarms were sounded from fire pull stations.

Public Safety and Princeton Borough Police have been attempting to discourage people from pulling the alarms without reason. On March 10, Borough Police arrested Amlan Majumdar GS, a former D-Bar manager, for allegedly pulling a fire alarm, according to a statement from police.

"Amlan has been a conscientious bar czar. Although he resigned his position, he's always been a supportive member of the Graduate College," said Karen Larsen GS, the house advisor for the Graduate College. "This came as a surprise."

Larsen noted that the increased number of alarms began after University administrators announced their policy of restricting access to the D-Bar to residents of the Graduate College and their guests, though she added that she does not believe the false alarms were directly provoked by the decision.

"There has been a series of false fire alarms — more than in the past. I do not believe that it's anything organized or a protest. The pulling of fire alarms would not be something that the bar staff would support," Larsen said.

"Certainly, there's been a lot of discussion about the quality of life at the grad college with the [D-Bar] issue and the Wythes suggestion [to convert the facility into a sixth residential college], but in terms of connecting the two, it would be a bit of a stretch to do that," she said.

Larsen called Majumdar's actions "a bit of evening foolishness" resulting from a night out with friends. She said that Majumdar had sent out an e-mail to members of the Graduate House Committee apologizing for his actions.

Majumdar resigned Feb. 23 in protest of the University's plans to restrict D-Bar access. He was unavailable for comment yesterday.
