The new psychology building is not the only thing to have been erected on Poe Field recently. Princeton was surprised last month when it awoke to discover a large penis, made entirely of snow, had arisen in the middle of the field just south of Bloomberg Hall.

It's unbelievably difficult to pick best songs of any given year. There are a myriad of factors that go into making a song stick: the time of year, the genre, your mood, your situation (at a party, in your bedroom), and more. So while it's heartbreaking to slough off all the songs that maybe made you cry or had you dancing all night long that one weekend, that's what we have had to do here. These are the songs that we believe uniquely stood out in the year 2013 as strong, meaningful pieces of art. But of course, this is just our opinion. Let us know what you think by taking the reader survey here, we'll post your choices next week. In the meantime, here's the Intersections list of best songs of 2013.

It's about time we switched over from music to one of Intersections' other strong-suits: film. This year's theaters were filled with provoking graphics, narratives, and performances. See what our staff thought of the year 2013 in movies, and let us know what you think in the comments!12 Years A SlaveThis film offers one of heaviest and most authentic depictions of Southern slavery ever created. The sincere, beautiful cinematography and acting as well as the earth-shattering story make for one of the best films of all time.- Lisa Femia, Amy Garland, Jarron McAllisterBefore MidnightDirector Richard Linklater and actors Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy present an un-idealistic, poignant, and yet optimistic take on love. Before Midnightcontinues in the spirit of its predecessors with its whip-smart dialogue and authentic performances. As the last of a trilogy, the film delivers closure that satisfies our romantic sensibilities without straying from the realism of the series as a whole.- Whitney ShaCaptain PhillipsThis re-telling of the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama by Somalian pirates is the most realistic, intense thriller I've seen in a while. Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi both deliver incredible performances as the ship's captain and the leader of the pirates, respectively.- Max GollinFrozenIn a year when even the blockbusters were gritty and pessimistic, this animated musical was probably the most fun I had in a theater. Plus, this movie featured dynamic female characters and more convincing plot twists than most others films I saw this year (I'm looking at you Stra Trek).- Lizzy BradleyFruitvale Station12 Years a Slavemight be the most prominent movie with intense racial themes, butFruitvale Station, a more modern examination of racial discrimination, should definitely be on everyone's list of best films this year.- Jeff LiuThe Great Beauty (La grande bellezza)This film is profound in its content and beautifully nostalgic in its style. I originally watched it just for the scenes of Italy and listening to Italian, but I was incredibly impressed with the story as well.- Lara NorgaardThe Hunger Games: CatchingFireAlthough somewhat overhyped, this film raises the stakes for Jennifer Lawrence as she delivers a far more impressive performance, wrought with both humor and emotion. Her acting skills are raw and so is the meat from the people she annihilates. This is not a ripoff offBattle RoyaleorEnder's Game; rather, it offers something deeper and meaningful that draws the audience in.- Edgar YuStar Trek Into DarknessIt was hard to find a better popcorn film this year, and JJ Abrams smooth direction gave the film an old-fashioned Indiana Jones adventure pace that was wildly entertaining. Gives me some faith that Abrams' futureStar Warsfilms won't just be mindless cash grabs but have some inspired storytelling as well.- Harrison BlackmanThe To-Do ListIt may not be high-brow, or even critically acclaimed, but I couldn't help but adore it. Aubrey Plaza was beyond incredible as an inexperienced, woefully uninformed high school graduate who only wanted to get laid. Sharply funny, it not only turned the classic teen sex comedy on its head with a very female-centric narrative, but managed to impart a few serious messages about something every college student thinks a good deal about: getting some.- Nina WadeThe Way, Way BackThe sweet summer nostalgia of the not-so-simple lives of 14 year olds in The Way, Way Back was beautifully done. A surprisingly funny, charming, graceful film. - Rachel Klebanov, Cailin Hong

That’s the advice most experts will give to those wishing to switch out old habits for better ones. Waking up earlier, eating healthier, and exercising regularly—these are all goals that tend to fizzle out by Thursday. By the time Saturday rolls around, one has already given up on the week and sees no point in continuing the effort. Starting on a Monday, which people generally perceive to be the week’s beginning, allows one to become lax towards the end of the week, under the belief that the new regimen can always be picked up the following Monday.

In the old days, you would walk into a record store and look for some new music. Maybe you'd ask the hipster running the cashier for some advice, or maybe you'd just meander through the stacks before landing upon your chosen purchase. This is where good album artwork used to come in -- a compelling image or an artist's vacant stare from the front of a square, plastic mechanism could determine what you left the store with in hand. Now, we might not choose most of our music from the record store, but nevertheless album covers can say a lot about an artist, their sound, and, of course, their image. Here's Intersections' top ten picks for best album covers of 2013. If you think we've missed something, let us know in the comments!Alice in Chains - The Devil Put Dinosaurs HereThe dinosaur skull acknowledges that Alice in Chains itself is an anachronism, as 90s grunge has fallen out of favor and does not belong in the current "Indie" rock age. It's a pretty funky and memorable cover, though it doesn't come close to being iconic as the band's Faceliftor Dirt. For meta-music reasons, this cover deserves some kudos. - Harrison BlackmanDarwin Deez - Songs for Imaginative PeopleIt's amazing because he shows how simple his image is -- just a headband and a wife beater. He isn't trying hard to be someone he's not and that makes his music that much better.- Jarron McAllisterDeafheaven - SunbatherBeautiful in its simplicity, and perfectly proportioned. Plus, that font is beautiful. -Jarred MihalikGhostface Killah - 12 Reasons to DieMinimalism is so 2012 and the first Ghostface cover that isn't entirely embarrassing deserves some recognition. The vintage movie poster is captivating and reflects the Hollywood epic level intensity of the album perfectly.- Cailin HongKanye West - YeezusThe simple, home recording studio look fits the rough sound of Yeezus. Plus, you could argue that this isn't an album cover at all, just like some might say Yeezus isn't musical at all.- Lisa Femia and Amy GarlandLaura Mvula - Sing to the MoonI love when album covers can express genre and style at the same time. Mvula's modern grace comes across in this simple, sepia portrait. Its sophistication and her beauty mimic the magical, orchestral soul of the album.- Amy GarlandLittle Daylight - Tunnel VisionPerhaps the most interesting part of this album's artwork is its counterpart: Little Daylight took the non-remixed album cover and inverted the placement of the color for the remix. The idea of illustrating a remix visually was fantastic. Also, the clean simplicity of the design and the font choice are fantastic.- Lara NorgaardPusha T - My Name is My NameThe lone barcode set against a white background might confuse many listeners, but this album cover perfectly encapsulates the minimalist aesthetic of the album as a more lyrically bountiful, less adventurous companion to Yeezus. Plus, the artwork fits perfectly with Pusha's dope slanger persona. When you buy this album, an all white brick with a lone barcode in the center, it feels like you are buying a brick of coke from Pusha back in his hustling days.- Jeff LiuVampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the CityThe slightly dystopian, vintage look of this album cover depicts exactly what Vampire Weekend accomplish in Modern Vampires of the City - a critical, wistful take on our modern times. And, as always, they nail the typography.- Rachel Klebanov and Amy Garland Wild Cub - YouthFor the group's debut album, the title and the image of two kids sprawled out on the grass are so fitting. The simplicity and innocence of this cover reflect the album's energy and summery feel.- Karen Jin

My favorite thing to do around the holidays is play with texture, color, and style. Holiday parties are the perfect time to experiment. You will most likely have more than one on your calendar, so you might as well have fun with different aesthetics. I’ve picked out five looks that are sure to accommodate all of your social gathering needs. You’ll be the most beautiful girl in the room.

Even describing the duo—comprised of Sacramento’s own MC Ride and Zach Hill—seems to compromise their unique identity. Hill’s in-your-face blend of punk rock, noise, electronica, and hip hop transcends his “drummer” title and calling MC Ride’s contribution of defiant shouting as rap or lyrics seems grossly misleading. Yet their work’s resistance to labels (and even rationality at times) explains Death Grips’ enigmatic appeal. Though criticized (in the rare instances where the virtually universally-lauded duo has actually been criticized) as inaccessible, Death Grips exudes an impressive confidence in its difference that makes their nihilism appealing regardless. Indeed, a great part of the appeal lies in the fact that they really aren’t interested in gaining our approval at all.

He had a multi-acre estate with a view of the Catskills. His property was dotted with storybook sculptures, bridges, park scenes and what might have been a bathhouse. My friend and her parents had invited me to their cousin’s house to celebrate “Thanksgivukah.” They told me that this cousin used to be the executive of what was once the largest hedge fund in the world. When the host’s gates opened, I indulged myself by leaning over to my friend and whispering “Gatsby.” This man, however, was no tragic figure. His family was beautiful, he served fine wine. After dinner, he asked me about my time at Princeton. I explained to him my goals, how I hoped to use my writing in conjunction with urban redevelopment initiatives. Frankly, I felt silly describing my dreams to a man who had already realized his own. Later, as we were leaving the house, the man told his relatives to “Remember his name.” He was talking about me.

There are so many opportunities to listen to live music on this campus. There are orchestras and a capella groups and student bands and student quartets and shows at Richardson and shows at clubs. We are surrounded by live music. It is absolutely amazing. And it’s something that won’t be as effortlessly accessible (or as free) once you graduate.

Four. That’s the number of phone calls I got in one day asking about the meningitis outbreak. It started at 8 a.m. on Monday, with my mother saying solemnly, “I have horrible news…” Honestly, I thought someone had died. No—she’d been watching CNN and heard the news about meningitis, the CDC and the vaccine that’s being imported. Later in the day, I got a call from my worrisome aunt in Houston, my cousin in New York, and my dad, who reminded me that he’s a softie at heart when he said he is “worried about his big baby.”

I have to admit that I’ve never been homesick, but Thanksgiving and Christmas are two holidays that I would do anything to not be on campus. People always ask me if I “went home” over long breaks, and I usually provide some sort of sarcastic answer to cover up the sense of self-pity I feel for having spent too many days sleeping, wandering Nassau Street and sleeping some more.

Governor Chris Christie was recently re-elected by a landslide, due in part to his growing popularity with women voters. We saw just how much New Jersey women love the governor when his Honor visited Powers Field on Saturday for Princeton's Homecoming game against Yale.
