News & Notes: Proponents of historic district face a $3,000 fee

The Princeton Planning Board decided to forward a historic preservation ordinance to the mayor and council for further review on Thursday night. However, town members decried a provision stating that proponents of the bill would have to pay a $3,000 deposit if their proposal was rejected and they appealed, according to The Princeton Packet.

Since the former Princeton Borough and Princeton Township were combined in the past year, the ordinance proposes combining components of the historic preservation ordinances of both and creating a Historic Preservation Commission to decide on the future of this proposed district.

If the commission rejects the proposal then those angling for the new historic district have the option of appealing to the Planning Board but only if they pay $3,000 in an escrow account to pay for it.

Concerns arose in regards to taxpayers footing the bill for the review of this district, hence the escrow account provision, but many town members in the meeting, including former Princeton Township Mayor Jim Floyd, condemned this provision.
