Pan-Hellenism: Greek Myths, Art and Music

This is your chance to go Greek without getting suspended! Take advantage of this free community event organized by the Orange Pan-Hellenic Association and hosted by the Princeton University Art Museum and immerse yourself in all things Greek. Start with an interactive tour of the art museum’s Greek art collection, and follow up with workshops centered around Greek mythology and traditional Greek dance. Shockingly, a Greek-themed lunch will be provided. For you vegetarians out there, there may even be lamb.

Free Love: Callaloo Conference

For its fifth conference, Callaloo, one of the nation’s premiere journals of the African Diaspora, has put together a diverse array of artistic performances, cultural events, panel discussions and speakers to present on and discuss the theme of “love.” Whether or not you have a pre-existing passion for the topic, the conference should be an eye-opening, educational experience well worth attending, even if you only catch some of it. Inspiration: “First Generation” with Director’s Q-and-A

Golden Globe-nominee Blair Underwood recounts three years in the lives of four high school kids from vastly different backgrounds (an urban athlete, a waitress, a Samoan warrior dancer and a daughter of migrant workers), “First Generation” strives to tell the true story of success. As these first-generation college students struggle to find their way in a new world, we are privy to their innermost thoughts, emotions and insights. At the screening, you’ll have the chance to ask questions of Adam and Jaye Fenderson, the directors of the film. The event is hosted by Teach for America at Princeton.

Music, Not Moos: Livestock Exchange

Livestock Exchange is a music department event in which graduate music students get to spend their time improvising and hanging out with special guest artists. This week, the series features famed avant-garde jazz pianist and composer Matthew Shipp, Brazilian saxophonist Yedo Gibson, Italian drummer Federico Ughi and Princeton-based analog electronics musician Jeff Snyder. Come watch talented artists practice their craft with Princeton’s finest.

Jazz Hands: Princeton University Concert Jazz Ensemble

Come out for an eventful night featuring the soulful sounds of our university’s own big band directed by guest conductor and notable jazz saxophonist professor Ralph Bowen! Despite having featured the works of several guest composers, this time the Princeton University Concert Jazz Ensemble devotes itself to performing the big band classics of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Be ready to be swept away by the smooth harmonies, complex chords, and spontaneous solos only an award-winning concert jazz ensemble can create.
