Women's Soccer: Scoreless weekend ends in pair of defeats

On Friday, the Tigers traveled to William & Mary to face the Tribe (5-1-2) but fell in a 2-0 shutout, Princeton’s first defeat of the season. The Tigers then returned to Roberts Stadium on Sunday to host their home opener against the Explorers, where they were handed a 1-0 shutout. With the two weekend losses, the Tigers’ record sunk to 1-5 this season.

Women's Volleyball: Rudnick returns as hitters lead Princeton

The women’s volleyball team traveled to the Lehigh/Lafayette Crosstown Tournament last Friday and Saturday, finishing the weekend with two wins and a loss. The Tigers (7-4) defeated Hartford 3-2 in a close match to open the tournament. On the following day, Princeton split the matches, falling 3-1 to Lehigh in the morning before rallying to beat La Salle 3-0 later that day.

Men's Tennis: Tournament christens renovated Lenz

The men’s tennis team opened fall play this weekend, hosting nine schools in the Farnsworth Invitational. Eleven Tigers competed in the invitational, including freshmen Ben Quazzo and Zack McCourt, who made their collegiate debut.

Men's Water Polo: Tigers remain unbeaten with weekend sweep

While the majority of Princeton students were jamming to Far East Movement, White Panda and The MashMaticians, the No. 14 men’s water polo team took to the road, traveling to Annapolis, Md., to compete against Iona, Connecticut College and Fordham. After opening their season with five consecutive wins at home, one of which was their opponent again this past weekend, the Tigers throttled their competition and jumped to 8-0 early in the season.

Ultimately, Princeton began the 2011 season no differently than it has its previous 11 years, falling 34-0 to a Penn team that gained 436 yards. Though the Tigers (0-1) did execute on a couple of big plays that placed them in scoring position, they were unable to break through and put points on the board against the Quakers (1-0).

Men's Soccer: Sanner’s goal nets Princeton 1st win

The celebration that began immediately after junior forward Matt Sanner received a cross on the fly and knocked it into the back of the net in the second minute of the second overtime was ostensibly a reaction to the thrilling end of a tight, back-and-forth game. But when the men’s soccer team watched the ball sail past Villanova goalkeeper John Fogarty on Friday night, it saw not just a game-winning goal, but also a potential turning point in its season.

Coming off a devastating end to its most successful season in recent history, the men’s soccer team is trying to shrug off last November’s disappointment and refocus its efforts forward. But fulfilling the ultimate goal of repeating as Ivy League champions will not come easily for a team that, despite its very strong showing in the conference last year, is not necessarily the favorite going in.

For the second consecutive year and the fourth time in the past six seasons, the football team will open its season against Lehigh, playing Saturday at 6 p.m. at Princeton Stadium. The Tigers and Mountain Hawks (1-1) have faced off each of the past five seasons, with Princeton owning the 3-2 lead. This time around, however, the No. 19 Mountain Hawks pose a much larger threat to the Tigers.

The men’s and women’s cross country seasons promise to be equally as exciting and successful as last year’s dual-championship campaign. Both Tiger squads finished in first place during their opening competition at the Fordham Fiasco Invitational, but the runners have their eyes set on several important meets at later dates on the schedule and, of course, the title races at its conclusion.

Men's Water Polo: Freshmen will lead No. 17 Tigers

After an impressive opening weekend of competition, including five straight wins against No. 13 Santa Clara, Fordham, Harvard, Brown and MIT, freshman center Kayj Shannon of the men’s water polo team earned honors in his first week by being named the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s Southern Division Player and Rookie of the Week. Shannon led the Tiger attack with a team-best 12 goals in five games and will be a key part of the Tigers’ season.

Last year’s season ended in disappointment for the women’s soccer team, when a scoreless tie with Penn allowed the Quakers to foil Princeton’s late bid for the Ivy League title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. This season, the Tigers (1-3) will be without four graduated seniors, instead featuring eight new freshmen on the roster as they make another attempt at the conference crown.
