There are still 26 days left in 2012 — maybe 16, depending on your belief in Mayan prophecies — but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to look back at the year as a whole. Princetonians have already won 11 Ivy League titles, four national championships and eight Olympic medals, making 2012 one of the most memorable calendar years in the Tigers’ athletic history. With the final classes of the fall winding down, we look back at some of the highlights.

In May 1992, when Bart Kalkstein ’92 and I announced Princeton’s dramatic overtime win over Syracuse on WPRB, giving Princeton its first national championship in lacrosse, we assumed that would be our final Princeton sports broadcast.But a few weeks ago, I was reading the local newspaper and was surprised to discover that Princeton was returning to the Cleveland area to play against Kent State, a perennial powerhouse in the Mid-American conference. Since we graduated from Princeton 20 years ago, Bart and I had often talked wistfully about the possibility of broadcasting another game together. Here was our chance!

Former Tigers keep on running as graduate students

Brian Leung ’12 has had his fair share of injuries. When he was healthy, the former cross country co-captain was an All-America, leading the Tigers to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2010. But plagued by lower-leg stress fractures during his collegiate career like many distance runners, Leung has had to cut short, or even entirely miss, multiple seasons. With athletic eligibility still remaining at the end of his senior year, Leung was faced with the decision many Ivy League athletes make each year — whether to go to graduate school and give it a shot for one more year.

After having one of the best seasons by a Princeton player in recent years, senior defensive lineman Mike Catapano became the seventh Tiger ever to receive the Bushnell Cup, receiving the award of Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year on Monday afternoon.

The men’s and women’s fencing teams had their first head-to-head competitions at the Vassar Duals on Saturday. The women’s team went a perfect 5-0, winning each match by more than 10 bouts, while the men went 4-1. And the wrestling team lost its fourth straight dual match on Saturday, falling to Rider 32-11 despite victories from two freshmen

Women's Hockey: Princeton splits series at Baker Rink

The women’s hockey team earned half of the points it had aspired to this past weekend when it hosted two ECAC rivals at Baker Rink. On Friday evening, the Tigers (5-7-2 overall, 2-6-2 ECAC) shut out Union 3-0, keeping the Dutchmen winless in conference play. The next day, Princeton fell to Rensselaer 4-3, handing the visitors their first ECAC win of the season. Remaining in the middle of the conference pack, the Tigers must continue fighting for every point in their upcoming games to guarantee themselves a spot in the eight-team league play-offs.

Women's Basketball: Hosts show off depth in 93-46 rout of Retrievers

The women’s basketball team left little drama to the outcome of its game against University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Sunday afternoon. Princeton (5-2) scored the game’s first 22 points while keeping the Retrievers off the scoreboard for nearly 10 full minutes, eventually prevailing 93-46 for head coach Courtney Banghart’s 100th victory.

The Tigers (3-4-3 overall, 2-1-3 ECAC Hockey) inched closer to a redemptive season with a 2-2 draw against Rensselaer and a 4-4 tie with No. 8 Union, both of which highlighted some promising aspects of the Tigers’ play this year.

The men’s basketball team bounced back from an overtime loss to Wagner by beating Kent State 62-50 Saturday night. The win improved the Tigers to 3-4 in the season while dropping the Golden Flashes to 5-3.

Women's Basketball: Tigers get 1st win over Rutgers since 1978

The women’s basketball team led another strong performance at Jadwin Gymnasium on Thursday night, beating Rutgers for the first time since Jan. 5, 1978, in a 71-55 blowout. The Tigers outpaced the Scarlet Knights from the onset of the game, leading by 16 points at the end of the first half and never letting go of the lead.

Men's Basketball: Comeback junior Barrett reaches new level

One year ago today, junior forward Will Barrett limped off the court with an injury that would keep him away from not only basketball for an entire year but from school as well. Doctors informed him he had fractured his navicular bone, located just above the big toe. Barrett’s season was over, and his playing career was in jeopardy.Less than 12 months later, Barrett hit a game-icing three-pointer to seal a 57-53 victory in the Tigers’ 2012-13 debut on Nov. 10. During his first game back from the injury, Barrett led all Princeton scorers with a career-best 20 points while also chipping in team highs of nine rebounds and three blocks.

Women's Hockey: After tough early slate, Princeton resumes ECAC play

The women’s hockey team opened the 2012-13 season with a front-loaded schedule, facing five top-10 ranked teams in the opening six weekends. Princeton (4-6-2 overall, 1-5-2 ECAC) has been more successful so far against non-conference competitors, but this weekend it has an opportunity to turn its conference season around when it faces off against two ECAC rivals at Baker Rink on Friday and Saturday.

The basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss at Wagner on Wednesday, falling 48-42 in overtime. The Seahawks’ comeback was the second time in two seasons that Wagner (2-3) managed to surprise the Tigers (2-4).
