During senior guard and co-captain Lauren Edwards’ junior year of high school, the Princeton women’s basketball team tied for fourth in the Ivy League, amassing a mediocre 7-7 League record and going 13-15 overall.Now, in the midst of the Tigers’ second-leading scorer’s final year on the court, the team is the two-time defending Ivy League champion and appears poised for a three-peat.

The women’s hockey team came out on the losing side of two defensive duels this weekend. Despite strong play by senior goalie Rachel Weber and the rest of the defensive squad, the Tigers fell to Clarkson 2-1 and St. Lawrence 1-0.

Men's Hockey: Tigers swept in New York road series

The men’s hockey team hit a roadblock this weekend in its games at Clarkson and St. Lawrence as it fell to the conference opponents 3-2 and 4-1, respectively. Going into the matchups, the Tigers had gone undefeated over the span of their last four games, all of which they played at Baker Rink. Sophomore netminder Sean Bonar made more saves than his counterparts on Friday and Saturday night, but Princeton’s offense failed to deliver on several of its shooting opportunities.

Women's Water Polo: No. 20 Princeton opens season 4-0

The women’s water polo team invaded DeNunzio Pool this past weekend as it opened its season with four consecutive wins. The No. 20 Tigers topped Harvard 9-6 and Mercyhurst 10-2 on Saturday, and followed those with a comeback 6-5 win over Colorado State and a demolition of Villanova 11-2 on Sunday.

Wrestling: Lions dominate decimated grapplers

Plagued by illness and injuries, the wrestling team stumbled through yet another weekend filled with ups and downs. After stirring up hope and enthusiasm last weekend with a 25-14 victory over a nationally-ranked Harvard squad, the Tigers dropped a disappointing match to Columbia on Friday night, largely due to the absence of four key starters, including team captains senior Daniel Kolodzik and junior Garrett Frey. With a day of rest and a bit of experience under their belts, the youthful Tigers bounced back on Sunday, making up for a 36-9 loss to the Clarion Golden Eagles by winning handily over Franklin & Marshall by a score of 24-12.

Something is going right in Princeton. If the rest of the Ivy League had forgotten about the men’s and women’s track teams’ triple crowns from 2011, the Tigers clearly made their power known this weekend. Competing on both sides of the country over the course of two days, Princeton athletes set three school records, three Ivy League records and several conference-leading marks.

Women's Basketball: Rasheed reaches 1,000 in road victories

This weekend, the women’s basketball team spent its time picking up a pair of Ivy League wins on the road. The Tigers started with a strong 72-41 defensive destruction of Dartmouth on Friday and trounced Harvard 84-56 the following night. The wins extended the Tigers’ win streak to 10 games, with a spotless record in league play, and gave them a two-game cushion on the rest of the conference with half the season remaining.

Men's Basketball: Tigers topple Harvard, complete perfect weekend

The men’s basketball team delivered exceptional play on Saturday, defeating the No. 25 Crimson 70-62, a day after a 59-47 victory over Dartmouth. Princeton (13-10 overall, 4-3 Ivy League) in beating Harvard (21-3, 7-1) toppled a ranked team for the first time since 1997 and did so at home for the first time since 1977. As students stormed the court following the win, the Tigers extended their streak of 23 straight years of beating the Crimson at home, in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.

Men's Basketball: Tigers drop No. 25 Harvard, 70-62

Throughout the second half of Saturday’s game, the men’s basketball team and No. 25 Harvard exchanged baskets, with neither team leading by more than two possessions. With the score tied at 46 and less than six minutes remaining, the first team to reel off a run would win the game.That team was Princeton, which outscored Harvard 13-3 over the following three minutes to send the visitors to the ropes. With strong free throw shooting at the end of the game, the Tigers earned their first victory over a nationally ranked opponent since 1997, 70-62.

Princeton in the Pros: 2011 graduates take talents to Europe

For three former members of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, graduation did not mean the end of their organized hoops careers. Kareem Maddox ’11, Dan Mavraides ’11 and Addie Micir ’11 signed professional contracts with European basketball teams over the summer, and all three have now spent several months adjusting to new lifestyles in new countries.
