Track & Field: Princeton takes pair of titles at Penn Relays

The nation’s top milers were taking no chances going into the anchor leg of the Penn Relays Championship of America 4xMile relay. Shortly after grabbing the baton, the runners from Oregon, Columbia and Indiana took off one, two, three. Taking the lead, Indiana’s sub-four-minute miler Andy Bayer picked up speed, trying to run away. He was attempting to put as much distance as he could between himself and the underdog team that had caught on fire: Princeton. Bayer, Columbia’s Kyle Merber and Oregon’s Colby Alexander urgently drove around the track, trying to break away from the Tigers.

Tennis: Bradley-Rose will depart, leaving both teams without coaches

Megan Bradley-Rose, head coach of the women’s tennis team, will leave the program after three seasons, she announced in a University release on Monday evening. The announcement comes one week after men’s tennis head coach Glenn Michibata resigned, leaving both Princeton teams searching for new coaches.

Men's Lacrosse: Seniors lead dominating 14-9 victory

The men’s lacrosse team outpaced the Big Red from the first faceoff to garner a clear 14-9 win. With the win, Princeton (10-3 overall, 6-0 Ivy League) closes out the regular season with a perfect record in the Ivy League and the regular-season Ivy League title.“If we had to share the championship, it wouldn’t have felt good,” head coach Chris Bates said.

Women's Water Polo: No. 6-seed Tigers draw USC at NCAAs

In its first-ever NCAA Championships appearance, the women’s water polo team drew a No. 6-seed and will face No. 3-seed University of Southern California, the NCAA announced in an online selection show Monday night. Princeton will face the Trojans in San Diego on May 11.

Men's Volleyball: Princeton booted from playoffs in first-round matchup

In their last faceoff against EIVA leader Penn State on March 30, the men’s volleyball team almost handed the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season. The 3-2 finish was the closest any team in the conference has come this season to beating No. 8 Penn State and gave the Tigers the momentum they needed to propel them into the postseason.But “almost” is as close as it would ever come. Penn State dropped underdog Princeton in the EIVA semifinal 3-0 at State Park, ending the Tigers’ season just short of the finals by the score of 25-20, 25-12, 25-22.

The Leader: John Cunningham

On Jan. 13, senior longstick midfielder John Cunningham watched the live stream of the 2012 Major League Lacrosse draft on his computer. After seeing two of his classmates — senior defender Chad Wiedmaier and senior goalie Tyler Fiorito — get chosen as the seventh and 10th picks, respectively, he stopped paying attention. It wasn’t until he began receiving text messages from friends that he realized the Denver Outlaws had chosen him as the 46th pick in the draft.

Men's Lacrosse: Star seniors lead defense into Ivy showdown

On Saturday evening, the men’s lacrosse team will host Cornell in the biggest game of the Ivy League season. With a win, the Tigers (9-3 overall, 5-0 Ivy League) would earn the right to host the conference tournament and complete a perfect Ivy League season; with a loss, they would share the conference title with Cornell (9-2, 4-1) and travel to Ithaca, N.Y., for the Ivy League playoff.

The Savior: Tyler Fiorito

As Princeton fans have watched the mixed fortunes of the men’s lacrosse program over the past four years, one constant that has stood through the folds has been senior goalie Tyler Fiorito. A three-time All-Ivy selection and a two-time All-America, Fiorito is in the middle of possibly his best season yet, ranking second in Division I with a .622 save rate and third with a 6.44 goals against average.

The Lock: Chad Wiedmaier

Six games into his sophomore season on the men’s lacrosse team, senior defenseman Chad Wiedmaier was still waiting for his first action of the year. He had been sidelined because of a knee surgery since the offseason and would only be able to play in the regular season’s final seven games. But the defenseman quickly made up for lost time, racking up 12 caused turnovers — the third highest on the team that year — and earning his second straight first-team All-Ivy selection despite missing the first half of the season.

Baseball: Title series appearance within grasp

The baseball team is in a fight for its playoff life. With only four games left to go in the regular season, the Tigers are looking to return to the Ivy League Championship Series, but they will have to get through some stiff competition first. At 10-6 in the Ivy League, Princeton ranks second in the division, three games behind Cornell and a game above Columbia. In order for Princeton to reach the postseason, it will have to come up big against the Big Red in a four-game series this weekend.

The Tigers’ postseason fate rested on the outcome of the final week’s Ivy League games, with five teams still in the running for the top four spots in the conference. Failing to earn a victory Wednesday night against No. 10 Penn (8-5 overall, 6-1 Ivy League), the No. 17 Princeton women’s lacrosse team (7-7, 4-3) failed to advance to the Ivy League tournament, which it won last year. The 13-8 defeat came in the Tigers' final conference game this season, but they will have a chance to earn a final win in their last regular season game Saturday at Penn State.
