Women's Volleyball: Visitors regain 5th-set magic at Penn

Despite falling behind after the first and third sets, the women’s volleyball team rallied to win its first Ivy League contest, beating Penn 26-28, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23, 15-13 at The Palestra on Saturday evening. Princeton (4-7 overall, 1-0 Ivy League) righted a three-game losing streak behind a match-high 25 kills from senior outside hitter Lydia Rudnick.

Women's Soccer: Tigers win Ivy opener on own goal

Coming off a 5-2 pounding of Lafayette, the women’s soccer team continued its road trip with a visit to New Haven for a crucial game against Yale. With each team hungry to open up Ivy League play with a win, the Saturday matchup had nail-biter written all over it. The game proved to be just that as it took nearly 97 minutes of near goals and fantastic saves to determine a victor.

Men's Soccer: Hosts sweep Princeton Invitational

The men’s soccer team (4-3 overall) hosted the 2012 Princeton Invitational this weekend on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. The four game event brought Rider, Fairleigh Dickinson and Penn to the Orange Bubble. The Tigers faced off against Rider on Friday evening before playing Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon.

The field hockey team’s undefeated record was snapped Sunday when No. 2 Syracuse beat No. 3 Princeton 2-0 on Bedford Field. The Tigers (7-1 overall, 2-0 Ivy League) had extended their win streak to seven on Saturday afternoon when they shut out Ivy League rival Yale 8-0, remaining perfect in conference play.

You would never know it from looking at him now, but before he was 6-foot, 4-inches and 270 pounds, senior defensive end Mike Catapano was just a shy kid who was bullied for loving school. Now in his second year as captain of the football team, the Long Island native has shown that he has the talent, and the work ethic, to potentially bring change to a Tigers team that has struggled in recent years.

Tommy Amaker didn’t need Harvard. As John Thompson ’88 and Sydney Johnson ’97 had so recently demonstrated for frustrated Princeton fans, young, ambitious head coaches were supposed to leave the Ivy League, not come to it. Amaker was a strong candidate: a Mike Krzyzewski disciple, a winning, if not a beloved, coach at Seton Hall and Michigan (from which he was fired), still in his early 40s — why would a guy like that accept a job at Harvard, a school with zero basketball tradition? And just as curious: Why would a school like Harvard want a hired gun like Amaker?
