Nearly 10 percent of undergraduates report sexual harassment

Nearly one in ten Princeton undergraduate students who responded to the April 2001 Core Alcohol and Drug Survey reported that they were in some way sexually harassed on campus.The survey, conducted by University Health Services every three years, focuses on the wide range of health behaviors of undergraduate students."We know that there are issues on college campuses.

Colleges tighten alcohol restrictions, but policies often vague, not enforced

University students are not the only ones fighting for their right to party. Administrations on college campuses nationwide are cracking down on alcohol consumption and binge drinking, but according to students, administrators turn a blind eye to illegal behavior and often fail to enforce their own lenient and ambiguous anti-alcohol policies.At Yale University, disciplinary action in response to alcohol issues is rare."It is not a common occurrence.

Study shows slight rise in doctoral degrees conferred in 2000

After a slight dip in 1999, the number of doctorates earned nationally was back up in 2000. Last year, a total of 41,368 were conferred in all fields, about 56 percent of them to men and about 44 percent to women.The 2000 release of the Survey of Earned Doctorates, conducted in its present form since 1958, indicated a modest increase of 0.8 percent in the number of doctoral degrees conferred.

Lynne Cheney discusses role of patriotism in education

Lynne Cheney, former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities and wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, called last night for American colleges and universities to institute core general education requirements, including required courses in American history."I suggest a general education requirement for all students so we can all participate in a general conversation," Cheney told an audience of over 300 in McCosh 50.Cheney, whose visit was sponsored by the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions, urged scholars to take on "broadly conceived" studies of American history.

DOE awards two professors fellowships for plasma research

Allan Reiman and Douglas McCune of the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab were awarded PPPL Distinguished Research and Engineering Fellowships last week.Reiman, a physicist at PPPL and a lecturer with the rank of professor in the astrophysical sciences department, was awarded the distinction for his role as head of the plasma configuration design group in the National Compact Stellarator Experiment.McCune, co-head of the Computational Plasma Physics Group at PPPL, was recognized for his work as creator of TRANSP software ? instrumental in analyzing fusion plasma experiments.The fellowships, consisting of a $5,000 grant and increased research independence, are awarded by the U.S.

Township seeks to curb deer numbers

Animal rights activists are questioning Princeton Township's new deer management program as the local government continues its plan to reduce the deer population.Under the plan, White Buffalo, a wildlife management firm from Connecticut, will be hired to catch deer and destroy them.
