But Jack Rosenberg remembers the time Einstein's colleagues asked him to turn the tables and help give the famous scientist a gift."The look of pleasure on his face was a sight I will never forget," said Rosenberg, then a young engineer, who had installed a personal recording studio in Einstein's home for his 70th birthday in 1949."I have never witnessed a more authentic surprise," Rosenberg recalled in a recent newsletter of the Institute for Advanced Study.Yet the gifts Einstein was known to give were not just personal; his remarkable contributions to Princeton and scientific progress are known throughout the world.

Borough police chief to join Public Safety

Borough Chief of Police Charles Davall will soon make the change from town to gown. On Feb. 7 he will assume a completely different set of responsibilities as the Department of Public Safety's (DPS) new deputy director of operations."He has a very keen understanding of the community ? both the University community and obviously the larger community that he's worked in for the last 20-plus years," DPS Director Steven Healy said, praising the 25-year veteran of the Borough police force.

Masonry workers restore historic buildings on campus

Before most students are awake, Jennifer LaFreda and Bill Miller are already up and working, busy restoring the eighty-year-old Boilerhouse ? soon to be 200 Elm Drive ? just north of MacMillan Building to its original 1924 state.On a typical day, these masonry workers are scaling multiple floors and repairing the existing masonry of the future Public Safety building before 8:00 a.m.With nothing but simple metal tools, these specially-trained craftsmen are able to completely transform the appearance of a building.Though work on the Boilerhouse has yet to be completed, the difference between the original building and the restored sections is blatantly clear.

Creed '07 wins vice-presidential run-off

Jesse Creed '07 won the USG vice-presidential election Thursday, following a runoff between Creed and Freddy Flaxman '07."I'm certainly excited," said Creed, who added that he hopes to establish more open communication among the administration, USG and student body.He also seeks to provide a Napster file-sharing service similar to those at other Ivy League schools, as well as a more reliable mail system."The first plan of action is to create this list of expectations [about mail service] and get the college masters and the head of mail services to sign on to them," Creed said.The election followed last week's USG ruling that Flaxman violated campaign rules, resulting in severe restrictions on his campaign during the runoff."It's hard to win an election when you have both hands tied behind your back," Flaxman said.

History prof. Wilentz nominated for Grammy

The Recording Academy nominated history professor and American studies program director Sean Wilentz for a Best Album Notes Grammy Award on Tuesday.Wilentz ? historian-in-residence for bobdylan.com ? penned an essay for the 52-page booklet packaged with "Live 1964: Concert at Philharmonic Hall," the sixth album in Bob Dylan's "Bootleg Series."Dylan's management commissioned the piece, which reflects on Dylan's 1964 Halloween night concert in Philharmonic Hall in New York, which Wilzentz attended, according to a University press release.Wilentz said in the press release that he tried to strike a balance between his personal memories of the concert and the historical and political contexts in which the performance occurred.Wilentz could not be reached for comment Thursday.Less prominent award categories such as album notes are usually omitted from the Grammy television broadcast.

Researchers improve nanofabrication

Today, sequencing a human genome costs about $300 million. However, a multidisciplinary team of University researchers is improving a technology called nanofabrication that could one day cut the price to $1,000.The leaders of the pioneering research, which allows scientists to study and understand DNA more effectively, come from three departments and include physics professor Bob Austin, electrical engineering professor James Sturm and molecular biology professor Edward Cox.They are working to create "nanochannels," which are as narrow as a strand of DNA and several centimeters long, Austin said.

For perhaps the first time during the current administration, the Undergraduate Student Government had a major event and USG president Matt Margolin '05 wasn't the one running things."It's all the election managers," he said.It is ironic that Margolin, one of the most active USG presidents in recent memory, worked so little on the event that unofficially signals his departure from office.That's not to say he stood idly by during the earlier stages of the election process ? Margolin said he hopes the new emphasis placed on debate and the link on the Point portal site to the election would increase voter turnout.This year's election also caused Margolin to reflect on his own election, and on the legacy he hopes to hand on to his successor."It didn't feel like I took on anything from my predecessor," he said.
