Students raise funds for roommate sued by RIAA

Delwin Olivan '08 might be luckier than the other 23 University students charged with music piracy by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) last spring ? his friends created a website and t-shirt line to defray the cost of his settlement.Olivan stands accused of distributing songs via the file-sharing network i2hub, which closed in November following a cease and desist letter from the RIAA."When the three-inch-thick outline of the court case against me arrived in the mail, I realized I really had no choice but to settle," Olivan said.An RIAA representative phoned Olivan on November 5, and told him to settle the case for $5,000 within 60 days or face far greater claims in court."These guys want $5,000 from him, and I get choked up thinking about it," roommate Sean Gleason '08 said.

Whig-Clio debates cohabitation

A heated debate over the University's policy on cohabitation, inspired by a Daily Princetonian column by Jason Sheltzer '08, took place Wednesday evening in the Whig Hall Senate chamber.The main issue was whether or not students would choose to live with their opposite-sex significant other if given the option.Sheltzer participated in the debate, arguing together with Dan Greco '06 that the University should allow cohabitation.

Presidents sign joint statement

President Tilghman and eight other university presidents issued a statement this week reaffirming their commitment to gender equality in faculty hiring.The statement, which grew out of a meeting this summer, reflects a collective effort on behalf of the nine research universities to create a more diverse faculty.

ORFE selects architect for new building

Frederick Fisher and Partners has officially been selected as the architect for the new Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering (ORFE) building, slated to open in fall 2008."The firm ... was selected based on the quality and elegance of their prior work," ORFE chair Robert Vanderbei said.Fred Fisher, named one of the nation's top 100 designers by Architectural Digest, has been personally working on the initial design stages of the project since September, project architect Brent Eckerman said.The construction of the $14 million building will be the first stage of development in the engineering school's strategic plan, dean of engineering Maria Klawe said.

Computer science professor Ed Felten will direct the new Center for Information and Technology Policy (CITP), which will bring faculty and students from the Engineering and Wilson schools together with experts from outside the University to study the integration of technology and public policy."I'm really excited to be working in this new center, and I'm honored to be chosen as director," Felten said.

Tilghman: Same-sex marriage brief outside USG's mission

President Tilghman said Wednesday that she did not think it was within the USG's mission to sign an amicus brief supporting same-sex marriage."I don't think it's the USG's role to take stances on issues that seem so distant from student government issues," Tilghman said in an interview.The University, she said, only signs amicus briefs on issues "directly relevant" to the University's "mission," such as the Supreme Court case involving affirmative action at the University of Michigan.She drew a distinction between the way same-sex marriage affects the University and the way it affects individuals.
