Interview season hits swamped seniors

U. adds 10 buses to campus fleet

In a move that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the University has added 10 new fuel-efficient TigerTransit vehicles to its fleet, the University announced in a press release on Tuesday. Travel services have been extended on certain lines to include new stops and new hours of operation.

Study: Alumni may donate to boost children’s chances

Alumni may donate money to highly selective universities in hopes of improving their children’s chances of admission, according to a study by economics professor Harvey Rosen and Texas A&M economics professor Jonathan Meer. Rosen and Meer have written a series of papers on college donation habits based on the frequency and quantity of tens of thousands of alumni gifts between 1983 and 2007 at an unidentified selective private university they called “Anon U.”

Students enlist for GoCrossCampus battle

Early Monday morning, Penn students turned on Princeton to forge an alliance with Yale, quartermaster general Dan Humphrey ’12 said in an e-mail to The Daily Princetonian.The move is part of an online battle, waged among the eight Ivy League schools over their virtual campuses as part of gocrosscampus.com, an internet strategy website that was founded two years ago.

U. will nominate 20 for new fellowship

Princeton will be one of 45 universities participating in an effort sponsored by the American Council of Learned Societies to give new humanities Ph.D.s a much-needed boost in their search for employment. This program will offer 50 two-year fellowships around the country that would guarantee $50,000 to finalists, along with an annual $5,000 research or travel allowance, health insurance and a one-time $1,500 moving allowance.

Seeking a place for Sikhs on campus

The few Sikhs at Princeton rarely have opportunities to meet with each other, since there is no formal forum for Sikhs at the University. Karambir Khangoora ’10, however, is currently trying to launch a group on campus to help Sikhs connect and to increase awareness of Sikhism on campus.

Helm ’68: U. blocked me from TigerNet

TigerNet subscribers may have found their inboxes slightly less full these past few weeks, ever since Harold Helm ’68 — an alumnus infamous for his tendency to bombard the alumni listservs with barrages of e-mails on a variety of subjects — said he was banned from the database. The University declined to comment on Helm’s specific case or confirm that he had been banned, citing privacy concerns.

Number of new flu-like cases drops this week

There have been a total of 479 cases of influenza-like illness on campus since Aug. 30, University spokeswoman Emily Aronson said Thursday afternoon. This figure represents a 17 percent increase from the figure released on Oct. 15, when the total was 409 cases, and it appears the spread of the disease may be slowing. The Oct. 15 figure represented a 57.3 percent rise from the 260 cases reported Oct. 5.

Choosing the chosen people

For the past five years, Rabbi Julie Roth has been working to change a puzzling statistic: Thirteen percent of Princeton’s undergraduate student body is Jewish, the lowest percentage of any Ivy League university besides Dartmouth, which comes in at 11 percent.

Godless at Princeton

Atheists on campus have no formal support network comparable to those provided by many religious groups, several students noted in interviews with The Daily Princetonian, but Dean of Religious Life Alison Boden said that to her knowledge there has been no interest expressed in forming such a group or instituting a position similar to Harvard’s humanist chaplain to specifically address the needs of atheist students.
