In the spring of 1986, a young history major wrote a thesis on American foreign policy in French West Africa. In 2012, the now-alumnus is shaping American foreign policy in former French West Africa. He insists it was “random chance.”Lewis Lukens GS ’03, the American ambassador to the nations of Guinea-Bissau and Senegal, authored an undergraduate senior thesis that bore more resemblance to his future career than he realized at the time.

Shared meal plan sees more popularity

Despite the recent uptick in the popularity of shared meal plans, Colonial Club — which has offered the most out of any club — has scaled down its shared meal plan offerings, eliminating its nine-meals-per-week plan.Since the introduction of the four-year residential college system in 2007, the popularity of shared meal plans has grown year by year. Shared meal plans allow students to benefit from a spacious residential college room while maintaining the full social experience of an eating club.

The federal government ended its short-lived investigation into alleged discriminatory admissions practices at the University and at Harvard. The U.S. Department of Education began an inquiry last month following a complaint received in August that the two Ivy League schools discriminate against Asian-Americans in the undergraduate admissions process.

UHS reopens to ill students

Amid a campus-wide outbreak of gastroenteritis that has affected at least 243 students — nearly 5 percent of the student body — McCosh Health Center returned to normal operations on Saturday evening after temporarily redirecting patients to the University Medical Center at Princeton. Meanwhile, the University defended its decision at the end of last week not to inform the student body that the health center was diverting patients to UMCP.

When Veda Sunassee ’10 took EGR 495: Entrepreneurial Leadership with former visiting professor Gordon Bloom in the fall of 2009, he was inspired to take what he had learned in the classroom and try to change the world.Sunassee, along with classmates Faaez ul Haq ’12 and Amira Polack ’12, joined Danny Growald ’11 to found the Princeton Social Entrepreneurship Initiative. McCosh to divert patients to hospital

In the midst of a campus-wide gastroenteritis outbreak, McCosh Health Center is diverting patients to the University Medical Center at Princeton due to a lack of available beds at McCosh, the Department of Public Safety confirmed late Thursday night.“All the beds are full” at McCosh, said Public Safety Sgt. Rob Adams, adding that students requiring transport are being taken to UMCP until further notice.

Museum returns artifacts to Italy after legal conflict

The University Art Museum returned six works of art to the country of Italy in December, ending a major decade-long international legal battle with the country over the ownership of the works. The transfer completed an agreement signed with Italy on June 2, 2011.In a January statement, the University claimed that they returned the artworks after an internal investigation into the ownership of certain items in the University’s collection.

At least 190 students have come down with the highly-contagious gastroenteritis over the past two weeks, with 80 of the sick contracting the virus since Friday, University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua said.The spread of gastroenteritis caused by norovirus is “particularly higher” when compared with previous years, Mbugua said.
