News & Notes: Wilcove GS ’85 wins Pioneer of Science Award

Ecology and evolutionary biology professor David Wilcove GS ’85, who also teaches at the Wilson School, has been named a recipient of the 2011 Pioneers of Science Award in recognition for his work as an ecologist. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their respective fields and who live, or have lived, in western New York. The Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute of Buffalo, N.Y., sponsors the award.

ChE changes name to CBE

When the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering — previously known as the Department of Chemical Engineering — officially adopted its revised name on July 1, 2010, department administrators said they hoped that the change would more accurately reflect the department’s goals in recognition of surging student interest and the nationwide growth of the field.

Open access policy adopted

Last Monday, the University formally adopted a new policy of open access for Princeton-produced scholarly publications. This policy will authorize Princeton faculty members to post their published articles on their own websites, an online University repository or other free archives for the general public.

Council for International Teaching and Research appoints four new Global Scholars

Last week, Princeton’s Council for International Teaching and Research announced four new Global Scholars who have been awarded three-year appointments at the University beginning in the years 2011-12 and 2012-13. The four individuals are scholars of different academic disciplines and all are from different parts of the globe.

Transit memo rereleased

The Borough and the Township prepared a memorandum of understanding outlining a plan for a right-of-way easement that, should a new transit system ever replace the Dinky, would allow for a potential light rail system running all the way to Nassau Street.

Council hopefuls discuss issues

Candidates for this November’s Borough Council election discussed consolidation and town-gown relations at a public debate on Tuesday evening. Most of the candidates opposed the University’s plan to move the Dinky station and supported requests that the University increase its annual contribution to the Borough.
