Town celebrates annual Pi Day with ‘Geek Freak’ activities

On Wednesday the mathematical constant pi stepped out from the shadows of Fine Hall to enjoy its annual day of public recognition. While March 14, the date that resembles the irrational number most closely, is an informal national holiday known as “Pi Day,” it has a special significance for Princeton as the birthday of Albert Einstein. The town celebrated in style with its “Geek Freak” weekend, full of pi recitation contests, pie-eating and -judging contests and a mathlete challenge.

‘Kony 2012’ highlights ties to Princeton in Africa

In response to public criticism of its “Kony 2012” campaign and its general operating procedures, the nonprofit advocacy group Invisible Children has cited its partnership with the Princeton in Africa program as a sign of the organization’s legitimacy.Invisible Children is pushing back against allegations of misallocating funds and oversimplifying complex issues. On a page on its website where the organization responds to common criticisms, Invisible Children specifically mentioned Princeton in Africa as a program that it relies upon to ensure that local partners are engaged in its projects.

Shelton named Butler master

Psychology professor Nicole Shelton will serve as the new master of Butler College, Dean of the College Valerie Smith and Dean of Undergraduate Students Kathleen Deignan announced on Friday.She will replace current Butler Master and electrical engineering professor Sanjeev Kulkarni, who has served in the position for the past seven years, effective July 1. Shelton’s term as master will last four years.

Molecular biology program grants stipends for summer research

While many University students are still waiting for their summer plans to solidify, most rising seniors in the Department of Molecular Biology already know exactly where they will be for June, July and August: on campus.Each summer, the molecular biology department offers a nine-week program for students with a lab-based thesis, giving them a chance to conduct a good portion of their research before the start of senior year.

Women compose 63 percent of this year’s candidates for Young Alumni Trustee, a significant increase over past years when about a third of the candidates for the position were women.Of this year’s 41 candidates — the largest slate of candidates since 1999 — 26 are female, according to Young Alumni Trustee administrator Leslie Rowley.

Zelizer: Dual life as scholar, mainstream news pundit

Like many American fathers, after Wilson School professor Julian Zelizer wakes up in the morning, he takes his kids to school and then heads to the gym. But instead of watching sports highlights or listening to music while he lifts weights, Zelizer mulls over ideas for his weekly CNN column.It is rare for professors to appear in mass media as much as Zelizer does. In addition to teaching HIS 583: Readings in American Political History this semester, Zelizer has appeared 18 times on Bloomberg television in the past month. On Sept. 10, he authored a column in The New York Times about the history of one-term presidents. Two days later, he was back in his home outlet, penning away on the political legacy of 9/11.

Ellsberg discusses Pentagon Papers

Daniel Ellsberg, who famously leaked the top secret Pentagon Papers in the midst of the Vietnam War, gave a lecture on Thursday afternoon titled “Secrets, Lies and Leaks: From the Pentagon Papers to WikiLeaks.”The conversation also included Bart Gellman ’82, a visiting lecturer in the Wilson School and a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. The pair discussed the balance between government secrecy and the First Amendment.

Bhargava joins Forbes Magazine's wealthiest

Manoj Bhargava, the founder of 5-hour ENERGY and a University dropout, was named to Forbes Magazine’s list of the world’s wealthiest people for the first time on Wednesday.Bhargava’s wealth is valued at about $1.3 billion, placing him at 960th on Forbes’s list of the 1,226 wealthiest people on the planet. According to a profile written on him that appeared in Forbes in February, Bhargava speculates that he is probably the wealthiest Indian living in the United States.

When Brian Binnie GS ’78 first arrived in outer space, he could see the topography of California and the Pacific Ocean spreading out below him, as well as weather patterns. The atmosphere separated the black void of space from Earth, and Binnie described it as a “thin blue electric ribbon of light.”“You know, you see the pictures on magazine covers, but the eye is so much more dynamic than any camera or video, and it ... lasts for five minutes,” Binnie said.

Mathey starts Co-op

Last Friday afternoon, Damaris Miller ’15 walked to the basement of Edwards Hall to prepare dinner with three other members of a new co-op in Mathey College.Two hours later, the other members of the 13-member co-op joined the cooks for a meal of lentils, curry with vegetables, grilled cheese and peanut butter with chocolate chip cookies.
