Student email to switch to Gmail beginning in August

All undergraduate student email will switch to Gmail between this August and December, the culmination of a semester-long joint project between the Office of Information Technology and the USG to evaluate potential replacements for the current Webmail system.Gmail will be the default email service for members of the Class of 2016, and this summer members of the Classes of 2013, 2014 and 2015 will have their email switched to the new server.

Updated: Three released from hospital after explosion causes chemical spill at Frick Chemistry Laboratory

Three people were hospitalized after a glass container filled with a highly corrosive acid exploded in Frick Chemistry Laboratory this afternoon, causing the evacuation of 300 people and the interruption of a final exam. All three victims have since been released from the hospital.

Fire at Whitman Dining Hall prompts evacuation

A grill fire in the Whitman Dining Hall caused the evacuation of 250 people from the residential college at around 8 p.m. tonight, University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua said. No injuries were reported.“Flames started on one of the stoves in the kitchen,” Adriana Estor ’12, who was working in the kitchen at the time, said of the incident. “The cooks were trying to put it out but couldn’t, and so they called the fire truck."

U. may convert rooms, hire more faculty to accommodate large Class of 2016

The University will increase the capacity of freshman rooms and repurpose residential college social spaces to house students from the larger-than-expected Class of 2016. Additionally, many University programs will also expand their operations to meet the greater demand from the freshman class, in particular by increasing the number of sections for large, popular introductory courses and increasing the number of Writing Seminar courses offered.

Some students not to be admitted to Fifth, 10th Reunions tents

Partly due to concerns about underage drinking, students under the age of 21 who are not staying in interim housing and are not guests of either members of the Class of 2012, members of the Fifth Reunion class, the 10th Reunion class or any of their satellite classes, will not be admitted into the Fifth or 10th Reunions tents after 5 p.m. The only attendees at Reunions affected by the change will be those under 21 who are attending Reunions as a guest of an alumnus who graduated before 2000.

Lupe Fiasco, Harry Belafonte, George Clinton take stage in tribute to Cornel West GS '80

Singer and activist Harry Belafonte, rapper Lupe Fiasco and funk musician George Clinton gathered in McCarter Theatre on Wednesday to celebrate the retirement of African American studies professor Cornel West GS ’80.The event, called “A Bluesman in the Life of the Mind,” honored West’s 40-year relationship with the University. West is retiring as a Princeton professor and will begin teaching at Union Theological Seminary in New York City next fall. Belafonte, Fiasco and Clinton were not announced as performers in order to surprise West.

For admissions hopefuls, wait on the list ends

Over the month of April, the 2,095 students who were offered admission to the Class of 2016 have been weighing the pros and cons of Princeton relative to other schools, trying to decide whether to accept or reject Princeton’s offer. And over the same month, a second group of students sat on the sidelines, anxiously hoping that at least some of them found something about Princeton they didn’t like.
