Va. teen wins race relations prize

The first white student to lead his high school’s Black Student Union has been awarded the 2012 Washington, D.C., Princeton Prize in Race Relations. The regional award is given by a volunteer alumni committee in Washington, D.C. to recognize high school students’ efforts to improve race relations and increase diversity.

Public library to change legal status

As the Borough-Township consolidation moves forward, the Princeton Public Library will be changing its legal status. Now one of only six joint municipal libraries in New Jersey — meaning it serves two or more municipalities — following the January 2013 consolidation the library has decided to lose the “joint” in its title.

Will GS ’68 discusses election

Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post columnist and University Board of Trustees member George Will GS ’68 argued in a lecture Tuesday afternoon that the clash between liberals and conservatives was actually a difference in ideological focus between equality and freedom.Prefacing his lecture with a disclaimer that he was not going to make any predictions about the winner of the 2012 general election, Will lectured on the policy issues that will divide Republicans and Democrats in the election season.

Taleb lectures on market fragility

Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the writer of the highly acclaimed book “The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable,” talked about the fragility of systems, notably the U.S. financial system, on Tuesday night.Taleb, who spent 20 years as an options trader on Wall Street, wrote “The Black Swan” in 2007 about the huge influence of rare and unpredictable events and the human tendency to offer simplistic explanations for the events afterwards. This is, in hindsight, a possible explanation for the 2008 financial crisis.

Borough and Township councils approve budget

Members of the Princeton Borough and Township Councils, in addition to the Transition Task Force for the Consolidation of Princeton Borough and Township, approved Tuesday night a $140,000 consolidation budget to cover the costs of the January merger.The TTF also heard a brief public presentation, received reports from various subcommittees and reviewed its policy on potential conflicts of interest.

In U. groups, faces reemerge

Last October, the University announced the six undergraduates who would join two professors and three deans on the Freshmen Rush Policy Implementation Committee. University officials said at the time they specifically selected members of Greek organizations in order to ensure a diversity of opinion at the decision-making table.The selection of these students highlights the politics of picking the policymakers that sit on University committees, task forces and working groups.

Pride Week highlights U.'s LGBT-friendly reputation, supporters say

The University has been consistently ranked as one of the friendliest campuses for LGBT students nationwide. Last week’s Pride Week, which focused on strengthening the connection between allies and non-LGBT students to the on-campus LGBT movement, is only the latest of the many events and services offered by the Pride Alliance and other groups that contribute to the University’s high placement in these rankings.

Gas leak forces building evacuations

More than 200 people were evacuated from five University academic buildings and eight University-owned residential properties beginning at 1:37 p.m. on Monday afternoon due to an outside gas leak nearby, spilling students, faculty and staff into nearby courtyards.The Friend Center, the Computer Science Building, 185 Nassau Street — which houses the Lewis Center for the Arts — 41 William Street — the location of the Princeton University Press and the Program in Teacher Preparation — and 199/201 Nassau Street were evacuated. Princeton Borough Police Captain Nicholas Sutter said in an email that there were no injuries as a result of the incident.
