Sept. 24, 1913 doubled as both F. Scott Fitzgerald's birthday as well as his first day of classes as a freshman. A member of the Class of 1917, Fitzgerald never graduated, instead enlisting in the military during WWI.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of Fitzgerald's matriculation at Princeton,the University library digitized his original manuscript of "This Side of Paradise" on September 11.The novel, widely considered the most famous piece of fiction that concerns the University, was partially written while Fitzgerald was an undergraduate. He completed the first draft while a member at the University Cottage Club. The manuscript was later revised and retitled before being accepted for publication.
The University library has also published a photo of Fitzgerald as a freshman. The photo shows Fitzgerald (left) along with two friends wearing small beanies that were called "freshman dinks."
