The U.S. women’s field hockey team pulled off its second straight upset on Monday, this time beating world No. 3 Australia 2-1.
Michelle Vittese and Caitlin van Sickle each scored a goal on a penalty corner. Goalie Jackie Briggs was the star player, racking up nine saves against the desperate Australian Hockeyroos. The Australians were playing down two players in the third quarter due to yellow cards, but Kathryn Slattery scored a goal to make it 2-1.
With the score still holding steady at 2-1 later in the second half, Princeton alumna Katie Reinprecht ’13 almost saw a shot into the net. Her teammate Vittese threaded a ball to her on the left post that was met by Australian goalkeeper Rachael Lynch.
For Katie’s sister, Julia Reinprecht ’14, the game against Australia was a milestone 150th cap, or international appearance, for the U.S. National Team. Teammate Kathleen Sharkey ’13 is also a force on the USA Field Hockey team.
The Americans now hold six points in Pool B, guaranteeing them a first place rank in the pool. Based on their two upsets over Argentina and Australia, the Rio Olympic Games is shaping up to be an exciting competition for the American women. Put in perspective, the U.S. women’s field hockey team finished last in London. Now, The Washington Post says that “USA field hockey has gone from worst to first.” It will definitely be worth following this team, bolstered by three Princetonian athletes, during the Games.
USA field hockey is set to take on Japan on Wednesday, August 10 in a game that will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network.
