This weekend the Tigers gave a thrilling performance to finish third in the Howe Cup, hosted at Harvard. The Tigers came into the tournament seeded fourth andpowered past the Yale Bulldogs 6-3 but fell just short of victory 5-4 against the top seeded Harvard Crimson, which wouldgo on clinch the championship, defeating Trinity College in the finals. The Orange and Blackwent on to defeat the University of Pennsylvania Quakers 5-4 in a consolation matchto finish third in the annual team championship tournament.
The tournament opened with Princeton taking on the Bulldogs in the quarterfinals. The Tigers got off to a quick start by winning two of the first three games in the first shift and did not look back after. Freshman Olivia Fiechter won her match at the No. 1 spot in three games, while five other Tigers secured victories of their own: sophomore Maria Elena Ubina 3-0; senior Nicole Bunyan 3-1; senior Alex Lunt 3-0; senior Hallie Dewey 3-0; and freshman Kira Keating 3-2.
In their final match of the weekend, the Tigers faced off against the Quakers in a consolation match. Ivy League champion Penn was coming off of a loss to Trinity in the semi-finals. The Quakers beat the Tigers earlier this season 6-3, but the Orange and Black was ready this time around. Fiechter defeated Penn’s Yan Tin Tan 3-1 in a match that finalized the Tiger victory. Ubina defeated her opponent 3-1; Lunt won 3-1; junior Rachel Leizman won in a 3-2 thriller; and Toth dominated her opponent 3-0.
On the victory, senior Hadley Chu said, “In my four years here, we’ve never had a team as deep as the one that competed this weekend. It felt like everything we had been working towards this season finally clicked all at once this weekend and I know we gave 110 percent of what we had and I wouldn’t have done anything differently.” The Tigers will now set their sights on the individual championships, which will be held in two weeks time at Jadwin Gym.
The men had a less eventful weekend as they had one final match before the national championships next weekend. The Tigers suffered a 7-2 loss against Trinity. Both senior Samuel Kang and classmate Tyler Osborne found victory at the one and two spots. Kang won the match in five games 3-2 and Osborne swept his opponent by a score of 10, 3, 1. The men now hope to qualify for team championships next weekend. Only eight teams make the top bracket for the tournament and the Tigers are currently on the bubble, ranked ninth in the nation, despite head-to-head victories over No. 7 Franklin & Marshall and No. 8 Penn.
