Women's squash to take on Drexel

Following the slate of men’s games, No. 5 Princeton women’s squash (2-0) will take on local rival No.13 Drexel (0-2) Wednesday evening in Jadwin Gymnasium. This contest marks the third in a series of seven home contests. Following Drexel, this homestand will feature one more non-conference foe,George Washington, before a trio of Ivy League opponents —Harvard, Dartmouth and Penn —pays the Tigers a visit.

The series between these two schools has been short and uneventful, with the Tigers taking both 2012’s and 2013’s tilts by 9-0 margins.

The Tigers are coming off two dominant performances. Their opening matchup with Franklin and Marshall yielded a 9-0 sweep, with Princeton players winning all 27 available games. The following day’s contest against Wesleyan produced a similarly dominant 8-1 result for the home side. Only freshman Olivia Fietcher, playing in the No. 1 spot, lost her bout.

Fietcher, a 2013-14 U.S. Squash high school All-American, enters her collegiate career with high expectations. She attained No. 1 national rankings at the U-13, U-15 and U-17 levels, and her participation on the secondplace U.S. team in the 2013 Women’s World Junior Team Championship signifies what a promising career this athlete has in store.

Princeton continues to add to its battery of young talent. This season marks the second year that a first-year player will feature at the top of the rotation. By the end of last season, then-freshman Maria Elana Ubina had played her way to Princeton’s No. 1 spot. Now starting her sophomore campaign, Ubina will look to build on last season’s Ivy League Rookie of the Year campaign.

In their last two matches, the Dragons have managed to pull off only four total wins. Two weeks prior to this Wednesday’s contest, Franklin and Marshall took spots one through four and seven through nine. The following weekend, Columbia bested Drexel in all but the second and ninth spots.

The Tigers are scheduled to begin competition at 7:30 p.m. A live feed will be available for subscribers on the Ivy League Digital Network.
