Tennis: Teams each take two of three to start season
Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams began their spring seasons over Intersession as each team won two of its three matches. The men played three Michigan teams, beating Western Michigan to open up the season before falling to No. 20 Michigan. They finished off strong, however, with a win over No. 40 Michigan State.
The women cruised by Temple and Akron 6-1 but lost to No. 52 Missouri in a close 3-4 contest.
Wrestling: Tigers earn first win of the season
The wrestling team won its first dual meet of the season, beating Franklin & Marshall by a score of 31-7. The Tigers, who lost their first eight, finally got a win as they start to get into the thick of the EIWA race. The team has a big weekend coming up, with three home games against conference foes.
Fencing: Men defeat No. 1; close matches for both teams
The men’s and women’s fencing teams each had two matches decided by a score of 14-13 at the Northwestern Duals this weekend. The men had the more successful weekend, winning all but one of their matches and upsetting 14-13 No. 1 Ohio State. The top-ranked women lost their matches to No. 4 Ohio State and No. 2 Notre Dame by the same 14-13 score but won the remainder of their matches.
Men’s Volleyball: Tigers defeat first ranked opponent since 2008
The men’s volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 win over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, its first win against a ranked team since it beat George Mason during the 2008 season. The win was also the team’s first win in a season opener since 2001. The men were unable to get a second-ranked win when they took on No. 13 UC San Diego, however, as they fell by a score of 3-1. Junior Pat Schwagler led the way for the Tigers, recording 19 of the team’s 61 kills against UCSB.
