For the third time in as many home games, the men’s basketball team let an early lead slip away at Jadwin Gymnasium on Saturday night. This time the beneficiary was Drexel, which overcame a double-digit deficit to beat Princeton 64-57, snapping a two-game losing streak.
The Tigers (3-5) held Drexel (3-6) to 17 points in the first 16 minutes, reeling off a 10-0 run late in the first half to take a commanding 30-17 lead. Senior forward Ian Hummer scored Princeton’s final six points in that stretch, riding a productive first half to finish the game with 19 points on 9-for-13 shooting.
But Drexel cut the lead to seven points at halftime and inched closer in the second period, pulling within one point with eight minutes left in the game. Senior forward Will Barrett
stemmed the tide with a driving layup to make the score 50-47, but the Dragons flipped the advantage with a 10-2 run to take their first lead since the opening minutes. The hosts evened the game with five free throws, aided by a technical foul called on Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint, which followed a first-half technical on Princeton head coach Mitch Henderson ’98. But on the next possession, the Tigers left Drexel guard Damion Lee wide open at the top of the key for a three-pointer that eventually decided the game.
Sophomore guard Clay Wilson and junior point guard T.J. Bray each had a potential game-tying three-point attempt in the final minute, but neither found the net.
The Tigers fell to 0-3 at home this season despite having held large leads in each game. Princeton led Northeastern by as many as 18 points on Nov. 13 and had an early nine-point advantage against Rutgers three days later before losing each time.
