Field Hockey: Tigers reach NCAA finals

A penalty stroke in sudden-death overtime gave the field hockey team a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Maryland on Friday afternoon, sending No. 2 Princeton to the NCAA championship game. The Tigers will face No. 1 North Carolina at 1 p.m. Sunday for the national title.

Midway through the first overtime period, junior striker Michelle Cesan dove into the crease and was fouled during an attempt to score, drawing a penalty stroke. Freshman midfielder Teresa Benvenuti sent her stroke into the netting, giving Princeton a 3-2 victory.

Senior striker Kat Sharkey scored twice in the first half, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead heading into halftime, but the Terrapins quieted Princeton's offense and scored with 13 minutes left to tie the score.

Princeton's overtime victory disrupted the possibility of a fourth-straight North Carolina-Maryland final.
