The field hockey team continued its dominant play in the Ivy League on Saturday, thrashing Brown 6-0 at Bedford Field. The No. 3 Tigers (11-1 overall, 4-0 Ivy League), having won four games by a combined score of 26-1, remain undefeated in the conference.
Princeton took a remarkable 39 shots against Brown (3-8, 0-4), its most in a single game since peppering the Bears with 49 shots in 2008. Brown goalie Shannon McSweeney made 15 saves, sparing the visitors an even more lopsided score.
Six minutes into the game, senior midfielder Katie Reinprecht, assisted by junior defender Kelsey Byrne, netted the game’s first goal with a shot from the top of the scoring circle. Junior defender Amanda Bird doubled Princeton’s lead just under two minutes later.
Brown slipped through the Tigers’ defense for a scoring opportunity in the 14th minute, but junior goalie Christina Maida knocked the ball off target. That was the Bears’ only shot of the half, while Princeton took 20.
After senior striker Molly Goodman’s shot off of a penalty corner was saved late in the half, junior midfielder Julia Reinprecht recovered the rebound and fired it into the cage for her first goal of the season. The two-time second-team All-America added another score early in the second period.
Sophomore striker Allison Evans and freshman midfielder Teresa Benvenuti also got in on the scoring with second-half goals for the Tigers. Sophomore goalie Julia Boyle, who replaced Maida at halftime, stopped all four of Brown’s shots on goal to preserve Princeton’s second straight shutout.
The Tigers will return to Bedford Field for back-to-back games this weekend, facing Harvard on Saturday and No. 4 Connecticut on Sunday.
