Women's Lacrosse: McMunn, hosts riding momentum

Previously, the Princeton women’s lacrosse record for assists in a single game was held by Melissa Cully ’98, Crista Samaras ’99 and Lauren Simone ’02, who each had five assists in a game during their careers at Princeton. However, this display of sharing the ball and taking advantage of opportunities is characteristic of this year’s team.

McMunn maintains that teamwork has been the key to the Tigers’ success.

“I don’t think it was anything special that I did as much as just really solid cuts and looks at the goal from our attackers and middies,” McMunn said. “[Our coach] mentioned something about [the record] at the end of the game, and I thought it was pretty neat, but the big thing is that we got this win tonight and can carry this over to our next game against Yale.”

Solid, cohesive play is something that the team plans to carry forward, building off the momentum of the win and the exciting achievement of one of the underclassmen.

“I really think it was just a complete team effort in everything today,” McMunn said. “We did a great job keeping their defense on the move, and that just really opened up a lot of great cuts that we did a really nice job of finishing on.”

The Tigers will have to continue to do just that as they face Yale’s solid defense and goaltending this weekend. After the Bulldogs held Princeton to fewer than 10 goals last season for only the third time in their last 13 games, the Tigers hope to continue with their explosive offensive, which has not failed to score fewer than nine goals in all but one game this season.

“Coming off of a big comeback and a win on Wednesday at Temple, we are hoping to use this as momentum going into the game on Saturday,” junior defender and co-captain Caroline Rehfuss said. “We are focusing as a team on fixing our little mistakes and working on possession and control all over the field.”

This attention to detail all over the field will hopefully serve to further strengthen an already dangerous attack.

“The team is really excited for our game against Yale as we are hoping to secure another win in the Ivy League and improve our overall record,” Rehfuss said.

Currently 2-1 in Ivy League play and 1-3 at home, Princeton would improve to .500 at home and tie Cornell in the Ivy League rankings with a victory.

With more than double the number of assists as their opponents for the season, 68 to 33, the No. 18-ranked Tigers show that teamwork can truly lead to great accomplishments. They look forward to tomorrow’s 1 p.m. contest against Yale at home.
