Nine days after clinching the outright Ivy League championship with a 68-59 home victory over Harvard, the women’s basketball team learned its postseason seeding during Monday’s Selection Show on ESPN. The Tigers earned a No. 12 seed and will face No. 5-seed Georgetown in the first round in College Park, Md., on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
If Princeton pulls off a first-round upset, it will face No. 4-seed and regional host University of Maryland or No. 13-seed Saint Francis University in the second round on Tuesday.
The Tigers are making their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, the first two appearances in program history. In 2010, the squad lost to No. 6-seeded St. John’s 65-47 in the first round, falling behind late in the first half and never gaining momentum in the second.
Princeton (24-4 overall, 13-1 Ivy League) finished two games clear of the field to win the Ivy League championship. A 73-67 loss at Harvard is the Tigers’ only loss in their last 33 conference games; the team enters the postseason having won its last 10 games and 16 of its last 17.
An 11-3 mark against a strong nonconference schedule was highlighted by victories over University of Southern California and at Wake Forest, as well as a last-second loss at Rutgers (which earned a No. 7-seed) and a six-point loss at Vanderbilt. The Tigers’ other defeat came in double overtime at St. Joseph’s in December.
Princeton received four votes in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
Three of the six first-team Ivy League honorees wore orange and black: senior guard and Most Valuable Player Addie Micir, junior guard Lauren Edwards and junior center Devona Allgood. Each averaged more than 11 points for the Tigers, who outscored their Ivy League opponents by nearly 22 points per game and went a perfect 13-0 at home. Sophomore point guard Lauren Polansky was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Sophomore forward Niveen Rasheed, last year’s Rookie of the Year and a frontrunner for the MVP award, suffered a torn ACL in her right knee and sat out the remainder of the season. At the time of her injury, Rasheed led the league with 16.4 points per game.
Georgetown (22-10) is ranked No. 23 in the nation and finished tied for seventh in the Big East Conference. The Hoyas finished just 9-7 in their league and lost five of their final seven games. Their offense is led from the outside, as guards Sugar Rodgers, with 18.2 points per game, and Monica McNutt, with 10.4, were the only players to average double figures.
The first-round game and any subsequent ones will be televised live on ESPN2 and streamed on ESPN3.com. Tickets will be on sale at the Princeton Athletics Ticket Office starting Tuesday morning.
