Track & Field: Men, women face Ancient Eight’s best in Heps

The women will look to retain their title this weekend. Additionally, the Tigers are in line to win the league’s triple crown, having won Ivy League titles in cross country and indoor track and field this year. Princeton has only completed such a feat once, in the 1980–81 season. Princeton has the advantage of being at home, as the event will take place on Saturday and Sunday at Weaver Track and Field Stadium.

On the men’s side, Princeton’s greatest strengths will be in the sprints and the throwing events. Sophomore Austin Hollimon, junior Mike Eddy and freshman Russell Dinkins all dominate the league in sprinting events.

Hollimon holds top times in the 200m and 400m, while Dinkins is the reigning champion in the 500m. Eddy and Dinkins’s top times in the 400m place them second and third in the league behind Hollimon. The 4x400m relay team is currently sitting at the top of the league, while the 4x100m relay team ranks third in the league at the moment.

“I don’t really want to single out any one event, because guys always step up at Heps,” Eddy said. “I do think that we have a great shot at the 400m and the steeplechase with sophomore Donn Cabral.”

Cabral also has the best time in the 5,000m this season and was runner-up in the 3,000m on two occasions. Sophomore Trevor Van Ackeren ranks second in the league in the steeplechase behind Cabral.

The Tigers also have plenty of weapons in the throwing events. Four Princeton athletes rank in the top 10 for the shot put, including senior Eric Plummer, a four-time Ivy League champion. In addition to the shot put, junior George Abyad and senior Joel Karacozoff also rank near the top in discus and hammer throw. Freshman Conor McCullough and junior Craig Pearce have the top two hammer throw marks in the Ivy League this season.

The Tigers also have strong competitors in the high jump, with the two top high jumpers in the league in seniors Justin Frick and Ian Fox.

Despite winning the indoor Heptagonal Championships in February, the Tigers will have to work much harder this weekend.

“The indoor tournament has some different events from the outdoor one that give us a comparative advantage,” Eddy said.

The women’s distance runners will lead Princeton in the meet. The Tigers boast last year’s winner and runner-up in the 10,000m, junior Sarah Cummings and senior Reilly Kiernan, respectively. Cummings also holds the league’s top time in the 3,000m and the 10,000m. Sophomore Alex Banfich comes into the meet leading the league in the 5,000m and has run well in the 1,500m and 3,000m. Junior Ashley Higginson won the 5,000m at Heps as a freshman and has the second-best time in that event this year. Kiernan is also a former associate editor for The Daily Princetonian.

Princeton also hopes for a solid performance from its sprinters. Sophomore Eileen Moran comes into the meet with personal bests of 11.85 seconds in the 100m and 24.47 seconds in the 200m — second and third in the league, respectively. Juniors Lauren Barber and Bianca Mathabane rank in the top 10 of the Ivy League in the 100m hurdles, while sophomore Danielle Glaeser and freshman Lauren Lewis have top-10 times in the 400m hurdles.

The Tigers have had success recently in relays. They won the 4x800m indoors this season and came in third in the 4x100m with a time of 46.86 seconds.

Freshman Tory Worthen won the pole vault at last week’s Elite Meet and has posted the second-best jump of the season at 3.97 meters. Junior KC Wade placed third in the pentathlon last year and ranks in the top 10 in the high jump. Worthen is also a staff writer for the ‘Prince,’ and Wade is a former staff writer.

Princeton has strong throwers as well. Junior Thanithia Billings won the weight throw in the winter and comes in with the third-best shot-put throw this season. The Tigers also boast two of the top five athletes in the hammer throw, junior Emma Ruggiero and sophomore Alyssa Pehmoeller.
