Women's Squash: Trio takes top three spots in tournament

While most students were frantically working on Dean’s Date assignments and studying for exams, three members of the women’s squash team traveled to Haverford, Pa., to take part in the annual William White Tournament. Senior Emery Maine, freshman Julie Cerullo and junior Jackie Moss placed first, second and third, respectively, completing a Princeton sweep that has them feeling confident for the remainder of the season.

Historically, the entire team spent the weekend before Dean’s Date competing in the Constable Cup, a tournament held at Princeton. Few teams have been able to participate in the Cup in recent years, though, leading the event to essentially become an intra-team competition. The William White Tournament thus presented an opportunity for the women to play a variety of opponents rather than their own teammates.

“We decided that the William White would be a [good way] for us to get out and play some different people and get some competitive matches before heading into the thick of our season in a couple of weeks,” Maine said. “Unfortunately, because of timing with exams, the entire team wasn’t able to go, but I’m glad that at least three of us were able to compete.”

She added that they began the weekend with high expectations and were pleased to see the positive results.

“We went in saying we wanted to finish one-two-three, and we did,” Maine said. “So obviously that feels pretty good. Our biggest matches really happen over a three-week span starting at the end of January, so it was nice to play well this weekend, see some of the results of all the hard work that’s been put in and feel good about where our level of play is going into the thick of the season.”
