New football head coach Bob Surace ’90 may still be an assistant coach with the Cincinnati Bengals, but he has wasted no time in putting together his Princeton staff. On Thursday, the Department of Athletics announced that Brown quarterbacks coach James Perry would become the team’s offensive coordinator, succeeding Dave Rackovan.
The Brown Daily Herald first reported the news Wednesday, though the University did not announce it until the next day. According to the Daily Herald’s report, Perry told Brown head coach Phil Estes of the move on Dec. 30.
Perry, a Brown alumnus, is one of the best quarterbacks in Ivy League history, holding league records in passing yards in a season and a career, completions in a season and a career, touchdown passes in a game and a career, and career total offensive production. In 1999, Perry won the league title with the Bears and the Player of the Year award.
After graduating from Brown in 2000, Perry spent a year in NFL Europe and the Arena Football League. He then moved to Dartmouth, where he worked as the assistant quarterbacks and wide receivers coach for a year. Next he was quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Williams, becoming offensive coordinator there in 2004. He then moved to Maryland as a graduate assistant, earning a master’s in education policy and leadership from Maryland in 2006.
After his time as a Terrapin, Perry was the running backs coach for Delaware for a year before returning to Brown.
Perry helped the Bears develop multiple successful quarterbacks, including Brown’s current starter, Kyle Newhall-Caballero. In 2009, Newhall-Caballero’s first season, he led the League in several categories, including yardage, passing percentage and touchdowns.
Perry told goprincetontigers.com that he was “hugely excited” to get started.
“I was fortunate to be contacted by Coach Surace,” he said. “By the end of our conversation, I knew he had the passion to lead the program to great heights. I am excited to be a part of his staff.”
“We went through a tremendous number of quality candidates, but James stood out as somebody with the passion and values I was looking for,” Surace said. “I am thrilled to have James on our staff and look forward to working with him.”
Neither Surace nor Perry could be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.
