Inside Lacrosse magazine has ranked the men's lacrosse team No. 4 in the nation in its preseason poll released yesterday.
Last year, Princeton compiled an 11-5 record and reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before being knocked out by Maryland. The Tigers return eight starters from that roster, including five who received All-American honors.
Virginia, coming off a perfect season in which it won the national championship, sits atop the list, followed by Johns Hopkins and Syracuse. The top four are no surprise, as between them they account for all of the past 15 national titles. The four teams also comprise the field for a new season-opening tournament, with Princeton facing Hopkins on side of the bracket, and Virginia and Syracuse playing to face the winner.
The Ivy League was well-represented in the poll, with defending co-Ivy champion Cornell next after the Tigers at No. 8, followed by Penn, Dartmouth and Harvard at No. 13, No. 22 and No. 23, respectively.
The Tigers will be led by senior tri-captains Peter Trombino, Scott Sowanick and Zach Jungers. Jungers and Trombino were both All-America selections in 2006, named to the third team and honorable mention, respectively.
Despite the experience the team will have on offense, a staunch defensive corps will anchor the 2007 squad. Last year, junior defenseman Dan Cocoziello was named a second-team All-American, while junior goalie Alex Hewit made the first team — a spot reserved for the nation's top goalie.
