Seniors face binding decision about printing service for thesis

Spring is here, and it is time again for senior theses to get bound. As seniors run to Nassau St. at the last minute, they are confronted with three choices of binderies — Triangle Repro Center, Pequod Copy and Print-It.

Each store differs in price, binding time and popularity. The smallest operation is Print-It on Witherspoon St. Store manager Astrid Diaz estimates they receive about 150-200 binding orders a year.

"We do most of the packets for the history department," Diaz said. "We only get a few from other departments."

Print-It aims most of its advertising at the history department, with some fliers placed on bulletin boards around campus.

Print-It generally requires about 24 hours to bind each thesis, but under extenuating circumstances, arrangements can be made to have it done within three hours, Diaz said. Their prices range from $25 to $40.

Another option available to seniors can be found down Nassau St. at Triangle Repro Center.

At a March 20 thesis-finishing seminar, organized by the senior class officers, Triangle Repro handed out about 700 bookbinding information packets, though they declined to speculate how many of the students would use their service.

"I'm going to use the Smith-Shattuck Bookbinding through Triangle," said senior class vice-president Courtney Coleman '03, referring to Triangle's sown-stitch binding option. The standard option involves a glued or plastic binding.

Triangle Repro is the only one of the three that offers this sown-stitch option, assistant manager Emil Matchyshyn said.

For those who just want the standard binding option, Triangle Repro also offers in-house binding ranging in price from $9.95 to $27.95. They also advertise that a thesis can be bound between four and six hours.

Beside advertising at the senior class seminar, Triangle Repro also tries other ways of getting business.

"Recently they got rid of advertising in the eating clubs, but we do advertise in locals at places like McCarter and in the Princeton Packet," Matchyshyn said.

The third option available to seniors, Pequod Copy, is located on the lower level of the U-Store.

On average Pequod does about 80 percent of campus bindings, Pequod representative Andre Liu '91 said.

"We don't really do too much advertising, but we do have a how-to flier on thesis tips that we give out at the thesis-finishing seminar arranged by the graduating class's president," Liu said. "They also give us the opportunity to speak for half an hour to describe the way we do things."

Prices at Pequod vary depending upon paper quality, how ornamental the cover is and the number of copies desired. The average price for most binding and copy orders ranges between $50 and $60, Liu said. However, base prices range from $17.50 to $35.

"I plan on using Pequod," said Olivier Kamanda '03. "If I remember correctly I think they are the fastest."

Pequod asks for a minimum of 24 hours to bind a thesis, but can service requests up until the last minute.
