Civic Values Initiative teaches social responsibilites

The most intriguing aspect of Brian Henn's "Page 3" article on Wednesday (Oct. 2), "As the 'real world' bubble bursts, students learn to adjust" was Dean of Student Life Janet Dickerson's question, "How do we engage these issues?" Princeton Project 55 has recognized this need for students to work together to consider what values and basic principles should be promoted, defended, or adhered to on campus.

Project 55's newest program, The Civic Values Initiative (CIV) is attempting to engage students in such issues. Although, as the article suggests, graduating seniors will be looking in various directions for employment and education after leaving the University, CIV believes that it is essential to encourage a sense of social responsibility — an overall recognizance that there is 'life outside of Princeton' — within all students, no matter what they choose to do after graduation.

We have made it CIV's mission to create the circumstances and environment in which "to be a Princetonian is to be an active and effective citizen and community participant." Please email civ@project55.org if you would like to join the effort to place more attention on civic values at Princeton. Lindsay Michelotti '02 CIV Program Manager
