President Bush nominated University professor Robert Finn GS '78 as ambassador to Afghanistan yesterday.
The Senate must confirm the appointment before it can take effect.
Finn, a visiting lecturer in the Near Eastern Studies department, has a long history of diplomatic service. He was ambassador to Tajikistan from 1998 until July 2000.
He is no stranger to terrorism — the 1998 bombings of the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania forced him to move his entire staff from Tajikistan to Kazakhstan out of concern for their safety.
Finn served at the U.S. Embassy in Croatia, opened the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan in 1992 and was deputy coordinator of the Kuwait task force during the Persian Gulf War.
Finn earned a bachelor's degree from St. John's University and master's and doctorate degrees in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton.
