Men's tennis has tough outing at Omni Hotels Championships

The seedings meant precious little at the 2001 Omni Hotels Regional Championships, held October 26-30 at Jadwin Gym. Only four of the top 15 seeds made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament and were accompanied by four unseeded players.

And in the final match, Dartmouth's Saber Kadiri, one of the 17-32 seeds, defeated third-seeded Jonathan Chu of Harvard, 6-3, 6-4, to capture the title.

Princeton struggled in the singles bracket. Senior Judson Williams, the No. 2 seed, was the first of the top five seeds to go down. Williams fell to eventual-finalist Chu, 6-3, 6-4, in the third round.

None of the six Tigers in the singles draw made it out of the third round of the tournament. Some overachieved just to make it that far. Tim Kofol upset 17-32 seed Nick Goldberg of Brown, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the second round. He was taken out by the No. 9 seed, West Virginia's Adam Marchetti, in his next match.

Senior Darren Joe, one of three Tigers seeded in the 17-32 range, coasted through with a bye to the second round, where he defeated Aravinda Neuman of Cornell. Despite the first-round bye, Joe's draw was not a favorable one. In the third round, he ran into top-seeded Nick Malone from Brown. Joe took the No. 1 seed to a tiebreak in the first set, but lost the match 7-6 (3), 6-1.

The two Tiger teams of Josh Burman/Trevor Smith and Tim Kofol/Judson Williams had similiar results in the doubles bracket. Burman/Smith were knocked out in the second round, but Kofol/Williams did reach the quarterfinals.
