Patriotic spirit should not neglect domestic issues

How will today's college students respond to the recent tragedies that have brought such enormous loss to our nation and its people? I know that like the rest of the nation, you are searching for a way not only to make sense of these events but also to do your part in the effort to rebuild and protect our country. I offer you my thoughts at what is a crucial time in our nation's history and a turning point for your future.

I write particularly to your generation because I believe you are unique in your capacity to lead us forward to become a safer and stronger country. My experience has shown me that young people have an unparalleled ability to approach difficult issues with optimism, to look at old challenges in new ways and to pour endless energy into solving seemingly intransigent problems.

Your nation needs this spirit more than ever. I hope you will bring it to bear on the challenge of making our country and our world a safer place, by thinking and acting in new and different ways to ensure our national defense.

At the same time, I hope you will be more aggressive than any generation before you in addressing our other pressing domestic issues, such as poverty and the troubling quality of public services like health care and education. Only by solving these problems will you ensure that our nation lives up to its ideals of being the land of opportunity, continues to be the model for freedom around the world and defeats those who are striking out at our values and our way of life.

You have the potential to surpass all expectations about what your generation can accomplish. Given your unique capacity to affect positive change, you and your peers can have an unparalleled impact on the future of our nation. It will require only that you respond to the recent devastation by investing yourselves to an unprecedented degree in pursuits full of meaning and purpose.
